Description
More secluded than the more popular trekking/climbing peaks along the route to Everest base camp (e.g. Imja Tse/Island Peak) with scenery that is just as good if not better.
Many villages with guest houses along the way but be prepared to be self sufficient (provide your own food & shelter) in the event that you arrive in a village and there is no room at a guest house. Having a local guide is recommended as the route (particularly the beginning) is not straightforward. Above Khare on the Mera La, crampons are necessary. During peak climbing season (Sept-Nov and Apr-May) there is likely a boot pack to follow all the way up the Mera La and to the summit. However, keep in mind that the altitude and mountain weather can always pose challenges to even the most experienced of climbers. Weather can be variable and crevasse danger exists above Mera high camp. Traveling in roped teams highly suggested above high camp.

Getting There
Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla. Then either cross the Zatrwa La pass into the Hinku Valley (not recommended as this is a very rapid increase in altitude) or trek south from Lukla, passing through the villages of Paiya, Pangkongma, eventually dropping into the Hinku Valley. Follow the Hinku Valley north, passing through Kote, Thagnang (would advise spending extra day here to acclimatize) and then up to Khare. Khare is the last village along the route. From Khare, it is about 4 hours trekking to Mera Base camp (an informal midpoint along the Mera La that is often used as a base camp for summit attempts. Depending on season and snowfall, the route may be all snow starting just above Khare. From base camp/midway up the Mera La, it is about 4-5 hours to Mera High Camp (a rocky outcropping that can fit a handful of tents and a spectacular view). Most teams making summit bids camp here before their summit push. From high camp, it is a moderate angle snow plod to the summit. Time from high camp to summit varies but most teams leave high camp around midnight, head to the summit, and then descend to Khare.
