Warning Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closures ***** RAIN AND WET ROCK ***** The sandstone in Zion is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN ZION during or after rain. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby. Description Suggest change

The Oak Creek Drainages is a vast area encompassing the backside of the Three Mary's, West Temple, Altar of Sacrafice,Meridian Tower, the Towers of the Virgin, and the Angelino Wall. There is a collection of climbs in this zone ranging from single pitch to long wall style routes.

Getting There Suggest change

This area is located behind the Zion Human History Museum and maintenance yard. Please be respectful of the private residences in the area. Its best to park at the museum and walk the road past the maintenance building.

A permit from the superintendent is required to access oak creek drainages, even for day use: (From the 2023 park compendium)

(a)(1)(iii) Park Service Maintenance Operations Area and Oak Creek Maintenance Storage Road are closed to public

access. Public use of the Oak Creek Maintenance Storage Road and Storage areas is prohibited without a valid

permit from the Superintendent.

Justification:

"...This closure is to improve the security of stored equipment and prevent visitor injuries during frequent ongoing maintenance projects."

This is the only area in the park you need a permit for 'in a day' climbs, which is contrary to information on the park website. If you are found on the maintenance road or in oak creek drainage without special authorization from the superintendent (wilderness desk) you may be cited.
