Description
Winter Block is the furthest sport climbing area from the parking lot with a 30-40 minute hike gaining most of a thousand feet. If you are a climber that enjoys the sense of being alone and secluded this is the place to be as you are the at the highest crag that 38 currently has to offer. From mid-day to around 6:00 in the afternoon the sun is able to burn through the clouds and become very warm on the rock offering a great view of the North Bend's valley along I-90. However, as we do live in Washington State, be wary of incoming rain storms by prepping with rain jackets. Winter Block has routes ranging from 5.5 to 5.12. Be warned, the easy crack to the right of the 5.9 slab has very loose rock that will explode if pressure is applied. Another piece to consider is being cautious of small ledges and cliffs that surround Winter Block. Watch your step and stay within the trail. There is a new handline guiding the scramble to Geoff's lower climbs. In addition there is a dedicated rappel rope if you want to save a little effort. These ropes should be inspected before use and they will eventually need to be replaced. If you want to climb the lower routes a wire brush is recommended, they don't get climbed much.
