Description

Garfield Woods is a nice area of Conservation land in Berlin, MA which encompasses the Forty Caves area. Several smaller boulderfields litter the woods, with a lot of problems that seem to be under the V3 grade. Right near the Berlin Boulder, there are numerous quality problems here as well as others with potential after some cleaning. There will be more info coming once I get out there with the camera.

Getting There

Follow the directions to Berlin Boulder. Once on Lancaster St., go to the next pullout by the small sign which says "Garfied Woods Conservation Area." There are boulders on both the Red and Yellow trails as well as in the Forty Caves area. A trail map can be found at the trailhead, across the railroad tracks.

The area is beautiful, and I did not see many other people when I as there. The climbing is mellow and fun. I didn't find any truly noteworthy climbs, but if you are in the mood for discovering cool bouldering as you wander through beautiful woods, this place is perfect. May 22, 2016
Anyone have any more beta about the area? Seems like there were more routes than mentioned on here, with visible tick marks, especially on the Berlin Boulder. Apr 25, 2016

The bugs are so bad here in summertime that I won't return until fall. I was able to locate more good problems and even two short trad lines in my last few visits before the black flies and Mosquitos chased me out. Should make a good winter destination for mid week training sessions.... Jul 2, 2014

Feel free to post the trail map if you like. Hopefully see you down there this spring! The Forty Caves area down by the swamp had some good stuff too, though I would imagine that bugs would be a major problem in the summer.... Jan 26, 2013
Checked out this area today and really liked what I found! I would definitely agree that many of the best looking boulders seem to offer V-easy to V4 problems. Many nice granite boulders while other boulders seem to resemble schist found in areas like Sandwich, NH. A worthy spot for those close by or if you're looking for a nice day of easy bouldering. Many of the best looking problems have good landings on flat terrain. I brought out a trail map and marked the location of 15 boulders that look good. I will upload it later. My camera died, so I don't have any pictures either. Thanks for posting this area. Jan 5, 2013
