Description

This is a cliff band of high quality stone west of Monte Vista. Most of the routes here are baking in the sun in the morning. It is as secluded as it gets. The bouldering here is great as well. There are pictures and descriptions of all established routes and boulders available at http://27crags.com/crags/the-pharcyde/topos/sector-4-2179.

Getting There

From the stop light in Monte Vista, head south to Lariat Road and follow this road to a sharp left turn. Here you go right onto the smaller road for about 4 miles crossing a couple dried up stream beds till you hit an intersection of 4 roads, keep heading straight at this intersection and go over a small hill to a gate that blocks the road. Park here and hike up the closed road half a mile to the cliff.

Went to boulder and ended up mostly scouting the routes. Nice area. Maybe the best rock in Valley, even if it is short like Witches. Looked like there's still room for new routes. Boulders are great rock, but most problems have ugly fall potential - come with a few pads. Apr 21, 2017

I look to see the stars ratings for what they are... just like the YDS ratings... as a simple opinion to use as guidance for each area. Time will tell as more ascents come. For now, I enjoy Mondragon's enthusiasm and hope it's not misplaced. Thanks for all the work on this area. Jun 21, 2016

Keep on bolting, the SLV could use more sport climbing areas! What I'm saying, though, is that I have a hard time believing 3-4 bolt routes are worthy of classic status. This area looks like a galaxy with all the stars your giving these routes. Don't get me wrong the rock looks good for the most part and I bet the routes climb well. Unfortunately it's a bummer when all that ends in 20 or so ft. Apr 2, 2013
@bhof, as you know, the San Luis valley is a place of short sport routes. Yes these routes are short, but it is what we have here. Everyone I have taken to this area has loved it. I thought it would be nice if more folks had a opportunity to come try my routes and enjoy the seclusion of the area. I guess I should just stop bolting new routes right? Go climb at Shelf Road where not just the start of the route is chossy. Apr 1, 2013

It seems like there is some FA bias going on here, these routes look super short with choss at the start of some of them! Mar 24, 2013
