Routes in The Dome Boulder

Access Issue: Seasonal Closure - 2018 Update Details

Description

I have been climbing on The Dome for 30 years, and I didn't see this boulder until a few days ago. Every once in a while friends would mention bouldering on it. Although I always knew it existed, I never grew curious enough to find it myself. Every time I walked off the top of The Dome, I just scrambled down the gully next to the rock. It turns out if you swing a little more East, you will not only bypass the difficulties of that walkoff, but you will also pass right under this rock. Most of you probably already know that. Well, it was news to me....

The Dome Boulder is actually a 20 foot tall, East-facing wall about 30 feet wide. There are countless problems with flat landings. You can have sun in the morning, or seek shade in the afternoon. The rock is coarse (rougher than the Dome itself) and highly featured. Most of the problems are surprisingly harder than they look. Even though it is not that steep, this wall can still provide a decent work-out. A few pads would be nice to have, or maybe even a top-rope! Some of the top-outs are insecure and pretty tall.

Getting There

Cross the bike path bridge under The Dome, and follow the climbing access trail to the East. When you reach the aqueduct, you have a choice:

Go LEFT: and follow the trail up to the base of the Dome. From the bottom of the East Slab, angle up and right (east). After only a few yards, you come around a corner, and there it is.

Or

Go RIGHT: at the aqueduct, cross the little bridge, and follow the trail up to the saddle between the Elephant Buttresses and the Dome. At the top, hang a left and you will shortly spot the wall just up the hill.
