Description
The Tokyo Prefecture has the largest population in Japan and because of this has some of the most obscure and over used areas in Japan. But this prefecture includes some of the countries most popular bouldering and sport climbing. On Sundays there can be dozens in front of each boulder and lines for routes. Visiting crags during the week and skipping holidays can be key to a successful outing. FYI, in Japan there are more Monday's that are holidays than are not.
Getting There
The best way to travel in Japan if you are visiting and plan on climbing often is to drive. If you plan to visit and are only going to climb once or twice use the public transit system or befriend a fellow Japanese climber and catch a ride with them to the crag(which will probably be Mitake). If you want to drive consider that the tolls in Japan are very exorbitant. Driving from Tokyo to Mitake can take three hours and cost $100 each way as well. Also an international drivers license is required( right hand derive here).
My suggestion is to use the trains unless you plan on climbing in the mountains for several days at a time.
