Routes in ALC (Alternative Living Cave)

Description

On Sept the 25th 2010 the Mountain Goats climbing team from Vertical Endeavors St Paul and their friends spent the day cleaning out this amazing roof, and former alternative living space, making it available to climbing once again. It is rumored to have been the home of some UMD students, and was complete with a stove and every thing one would need for surviving a winter in Duluth outside, including the remains of an ample supply of beer. Some of these lines where done by Jeremy J Schlick and Luke Evens in 94/95 but the names and grades have been lost to history. The cave consists of a large roof about 5.5 to 6 feet high and about 10 feet deep and 15 feet long, and is a definite must see for the consummate Minnesota climber.

Note: all grades are provisional more ascents need.

Getting There

From the Ely's peak parking lot head up the trail, at the top of the stairs turn left, after about 500 feet you will come across a faint trail on the right, take it and head up hill. If you come to the old rail road bridge without having found the trail you have gone too far. about 50 feet up the hill you will come a T take the left trail and it will lead you directly to the cave.

How can you claim all the FA's on routes you know have been climbed? Ego boost? Oct 4, 2010

i know chalk is a good thing...but wow. Thanks to everyone who took the time to clean out the cave. It would have been interesting to see the inhabitants set up. There is so much more potential in the surrounding area as well. pretty sweet. Oct 5, 2010
Justin, Since we asked the person who first did some of the lines here (that means not all) about names and grades and he said that he cannot remember them, and said it was ok to post them as new FA's, also we cleaned out the cave, cleaned the lines of moss and lose rock (took a full day), and also note that where the first ascentionist stated that he did the line I changed the FA and name to reflect that. Therefore I am going to give credit who ever put in the time and effort to clean the cave and the lines, unless the Jeremy or Luke tells me that they did the line. We are not trying to pad our ego's, but to give some thing back to the climbing world by cleaning the area out and putting it on MP so that everyone can enjoy, and I hope you get out there and enjoy the cave it is really nice, but before you post a comment like you did consider MP comment posting Guideline #1. If you still have an issue with my ethics after reading this write me an email through MP. I am happy to talk to you any time but let's keep the disrespectful comments off MP. Oct 5, 2010

Cool to see the photos, and nice work cleaning out the cave. It was a total mess the first time Luke and I stumbled upon it as well. Funny how history repeats or reflects itself. Always wondered if folks would keep these boulders alive. Good to see they are still delivering the psyche. Dec 4, 2011
