Description

Just outside of Joshua Tree Nat. Park, on the outskirts of the town of Joshua Tree, is Coyote Hole. This has long been the local bouldering area, and there are a few roped climbs as well. Is it a secret place guarded by locals, or just off the beaten path and over-shadowed by so many climbs and boulder problems in the Nat. Park. There are many Native American pictographs down in the canyon as well. Being so close to town, it has seen it's share of abuse from vandals, hobos, illigal dump site, grafetti artists, and the like, but the place is still an awesome area of cool boulders and winding desert paths. Well worth the time to check out and explore. There is a small " underground" guide to the boulder problems floating around. Careful where you park and walk as to not tresspass on private property.

Getting There

From the town of Joshua Tree, this is the canyon off to the left as you drive up Park Ave toward the Nat. Park.

It's a secret guarded spot by the locals who boulder there;...but not by me....I like to share; if sharing makes me unpopular with the local Coyote Hole boulder-type..I'm OK with that........and I like it when others share with me.........I don't know too much about the area, for I do not like to boulder...but if you like to boulder,...maybe worth a visit...I have done the bolted route on the big boulder pictured here....and I've been hiking down in Coyote Hole with my family. They are presently building a large new home in the area;...interesting to see how this goes down... With over 8000 climbs in the Park, I've never been too interested in pebble wrestling downtown... Todd......if Coyote Hole is such a closely guarded local secret spot ....why have you posted it? This certainly won't be too popular with the locals, but since you've opened the can-o-worms.... how about providing some route descriptions and details. Feb 22, 2012

We enjoy Coyote Hole a great deal since it's within walking distance of where we live. Some fun boulder problems there and a nice hiking adventure too. Oct 18, 2010
