Beginning as early as APRIL 1, 2026, 140 acres at the top of the Sandia Mountains will be under a closure order so the Forest Service can complete two different projects. The first project is an extensive "fuel reduction project" and the second is the demolition/remodeling of the whole upper parking lot and crest house. The Crest Road and all parking areas above the 10k parking lot will be closed in addition to the 140 acres of forest that will be under going the fuel reduction work. The Forest Service will be actively maintaining a project page on their website to communicate with the public: fs.usda.gov/r03/cibola/news…

Getting There

From the south end of the Sandia Crest parking lot, hike down the Crest Spur Trail for 0.5 mile to its junction with the La Luz Trail. Go left (south) toward the tram, hiking above Echo Canyon. After 10 minutes on the La Luz, the trail veers northeast at an overlook (Domingo Baca). Continue for another 10 minutes to the next canyon (TWA) and descend a steep trail. The trail tunnels through thick brush and trees past Trundle Wall; Alioth is the next large wall. Approach time is approximately one hour.
