I just headed out here yesterday for the first time ever. I'm not much of a boulderer but this area may have changed my mind. Super frictony coarse rock in a great setting. About 1.5 hour drive from San Diego. Apr 26, 2009
Went this past weekend, boy is getting hot! We had a passing thunderstorm drop rain for about a half an hour to cool things down. The climbing is fantastic, super coarse rock, lots of bumps and knuckles to get your fingers around. The route finding was difficult even with the San Diego climbing guide. I would recommend starting early as it takes a while to find a good set of problems outside of the standouts (vector crack, chocolate..). Jun 2, 2009

Found in the Super Sandbag Delux area. Not sure if this has been climbed before, but gave it a worthy rating.

Culp Valley (And Piedras Grandes) are at risk of being closed!

The State of California has proposed a closure of all off-trail travel in all CA State Cultural Preserves and Reserves, and Natural Preserves and Reserves. This closure will affect 100 parks across the country, including about 40,000 acres in Anza Borrego Desert State Park. This includes the climbing areas Culp Valley and Piedras Grandes, both of which are allowed and reported to have no impact according to the nearly 200 page 2012 Anza Borrego Management Plan. Many areas will be closed to recreation that are currently open and used without impact to resources. Any closure should be considered on a case by case basis of our public land, not as a cookie cutter blanket closure by bureaucrats in Sacramento since they don't want to take the time to manage our lands properly. If you'd like more information, including the Allied Climbers of San Diego's protest letter, please follow the link below. There is a public hearing on the issue in San Diego on June 22nd 6pm.

Hi, my name is Zach Johnson and I've been climbing at Culp for the past three years. As part of a senior project for my high school, I am looking into developing a new area in the valley, then collectively incorporating it with all the other climbs and boulders for an official guidebook for the area. When I manage to get the book designed, I am looking to sell a limited number at some outdoor retail stores, then transfer all the profits to the state park in the efforts of preservation. I would be really happy to hear all of your ideas, concerns, or opinions with this project, and in addition, would be very appreciative if you could let me know if there is a climb that may be obscure or undocumented that you want to be included. Thanks again for all of your time, and get back to me if you have any comments or questions! Aug 8, 2018
