Description Suggest change

Castle Mound State Natural Area in the Black River State Forest has great variety of good bullet hard sandstone boulders. People have been bouldering and climbing here for a long time. In the late 80's and early 90's Dave Groth and company developed many of the now classic problems.

Best time to climb is in spring or fall, but all year can be good.

Admin note: Currently roped climbing is not allowed in many State Natural Areas. The DNR defines "climbing" as involving rope and gear, so bouldering is ok. Tread lightly and be respectful.

Dogs are not permitted on the trails in this area - all of which are used to access bouldering.

Getting There Suggest change

From I-94 exit at B.R.F. onto HWY 54. head west for a couple miles till you reach HWY 27. Head south on 27 until you reach HWY 12 east. Turn left here and the park is just up the road on the right.

Park, and hike toward the Overlook Point. Most boulders are scattered near overlook.
