Description

This awesome granite crag is located above the Twin lakes in Mammoth and features great summer cragging on quality rock with breathtaking views. A large snowbank can make climbing on the North face difficult until late in the season.

Getting There

Take highway 203 to the stop light at the Village. Continue straight on Lake Mary Road. Follow this to the left turn at the Pokonobe Lodge. Take a right at the "T" and continue up to the Lake George parking area. Hike around the left side of the shore line to the opposite side of the lake. Then head up the hill on a climbers trail to the cliff.

Hey there,
Left my GriGri 2 up at the base of Black Leather (11a dihedral) on Aug 10th.

Went up there a few days later and not to be found. If you happened to pick it up I would love to get it back thanks!

I left a small rack up at Dike Wall last weekend Aug 3rd, if you found it please contact me. Happy to provide a reward/ransom if needed. Aug 8, 2014

The Dike Wall is located around GPS latitude longitude (N37.5962 W119.0133), about 0.2 mile / 350 meters SW from the S shore of Lake George, or about 4 miles / 6 km SW from the town of Mammoth Lakes.

Parking (lat long ~ N37.6034 W119.0107) is on the N side of Lake George. There are toilets and bear-proof food storage facilities.

Approach: The shorter approach hike is around the East side of Lake George -- about +350 vertical feet / +105 meters over a distance of 0.7 mile / 1.1 km, mostly on a good trail.

From the Lake George parking, start South past toilets on wide gentle trail on the left (East) side of the lake. Soon reach the side of the lake and continue roughly SE. After about 0.25 mile / 400 meters, cross a bridge over the outlet stream from the lake.

SW about 100 yards/meters reach the junction for the Barrett Lake trail, and bear Right to pass by that. SSW about 150 yards/meters just after passing over the inlet creek down from TJ Lake, see sign for trail to up to TJ Lake, and bear Right to pass by that. W along the south shore of Lake George about 110 yards/meters, the trail meets a steep rocky slope (GPS lat long ~ N37.5981 W119.0114).

Turn Left to leave the lake shore, and hike up SW steeply at first between two cabins. Then less steep continue up SW following good climbers track. After about 0.2 mile / 330 meters reach a slope of granite talus rocks. Scramble up this to reach the left side of the North face of the Dike Wall.
To reach the East face, scramble/hike up and left along base of cliffs. Aug 10, 2014
Agree with Kenr on the approach - excellent description. East side is the way to go.

We tried to hike along the "right side" of the lake and were met with heavy vegetation and no clear trail once we reached the inlet on the west side.

Trail along the East side is well maintained and easy to follow. Hang a left once you hit the obvious large rock outcropping on the opposite side of the lake from the parking lot (see photo by Nick Ludwig in Sept 2017). Climbers trail is well defined. Leave cabin #5 on your left. Sep 16, 2018
