Access Issue: Voluntary Nesting Closure Feb. 15 - July 31, 2015
Details
Per Bryan Gall: there is a voluntary seasonal falcon closure notice for Windy Point from February 15 - July 31. Please no caching of gear on Forest Service land. The forest service has been very cooperative in establishing this plan; please be responsible.
Description
Spirit follows the hanging arete on the right side of the hanging face. Into the Void lies to the right on the vertical east face overlooking the gorge. Continue about two miles further up the road to a hairpin bend at the top of Windy Point. While it is possible to park here, if your car rolls it will join another wreck down in the gorge. Safer parking (and camping) is available a few hundred yards further up where the road flattens out on top (turning a two minute approach into a five minute walk). A trail leads out east along the summit ridge from the hairpin bend. Anchors for Into the Void are on the rim about halfway down the descending slab to the south. Anchors for Spirit are accessed from a short rappel from the next to last tree at the bottom of the slab before sliding off the rim above the overhanging south face.
Getting There
Windy Point is labeled on the relevant USGS topo map. Follow the same canyon west of Newcastle that leads to the approach to the Fortress of Solitude and on up into the Flattops Wilderness. Continue up the hill on the dirt road (30-45 minutes) until a switch back in an aspen grove along the rim overlooking East Elk Creek. If you walk over to the rim from this point, the overhanging south face of Windy Point is obvious along the cliff a mile or two to the north.
