Description Suggest change

Most climbers think of the South Bluff as a place to boulder, but there is a history of roped climbing here as well. You will be rewarded with solitude, and some of the best views of the Lake for venturing up here.

It has also been rumored that there are some ice climbs near the base of the bluff if conditions are right.  See Widule & Swartling, or Swartling & Mayer.

Getting There Suggest change

The South Bluff Towers are located across the valley from the CCC area, and visible from most of the Park. The climbs are easily spotted in the horizontal band of talus near the top of the bluff. Bushwack your way to the outcropping and get climbing!

I have gotten there by:

  1. Starting at the SW boat ramp, hike out to the Reserve and keep going.  The longest but the gentlest approach.
  2. Starting at the South Shore, hike across South Shore Road and head uphill.  Brutal, small and loose boulders covered in leaves and fallen branches.  The most direct way to get here.
  3. Starting at the CCC/Group Camp, bushwack back to the tracks, cross them, and wend your way up to the top.  A little better than the direct approach above, but not much better.

Is it any wonder you don't hear of people hauling climbing gear up here?
