Shanghai is one of the most sought after boulders in the park. This boulder is tall, steep, and enticing with its proud features and excellent landing.
Be sure not to miss "Shang-High Knights" which is unanimously agreed to be a GHSP classic boulder problem, and "Shang-High Blaze" is also enjoyed along with most any other problem here.
-Shang Low Blow is actually its own overhung blade, and can be found off-trail to the right of the Shanghai Boulder. Its small and only has one problem, and is part of the same system of rock as Shanghai so I lumped it all together. "Shang-Low Blow" is a lot of fun! A few steep moves and a lip traverse. Check it out if you get a chance.
Walk past the overlook and onto the trail. pass the Overlook Area which spans down past The Hive Boulder and the tiny Foggy Mountain Fin. After the Fin, your basically out of the Overlook Area.
After Overlook, you will walk around a very tight left turn in the trail (30 seconds past the fin) and now you are in the SLS Area.
After the sharp turn, the next feature you will see is MOW, which is a massive double-decker boulder which looks like a huge mouth (use youre imagination... its a large patio boulder with an even larger, steeply inclined roof boulder on top of the patio).
Directly past MOW is another steep boulder which is Alcatraz. The very top nose of Alcatraz is touching the back of MOW. The steep dark overhanging face is where the Escape problems are located.
Stay on the trail as it turns right and the large boulder beside the trail is the Mike-N-Ike Boulder.
Past Mike and left more will be the Pit Boulder, and the the massive roof beyond this is SLS.
Pass SLS and stay on-trail for a distance until you reach the next climbable boulder. It will be Shanghai, which is a large, dark, overhung blade that the trail leads you straight toward as you round the corner on the trail.

From here, charge up and dyno far up to the bomber ledge above you. press up onto the ample ledge and follow that line up to the top of the boulder. the downclimb has yet to be negotiated due to the fact that it is still a project... (it doesn't look bad though)...[more] Browse More Classics in VA
