The Orb, V8

Description

Located in La Fayette, Georgia close to the Tennesse border, Rocktown is arguably one of the best bouldering locations in the Southeast. Some would even say its better than Horse Pens 40, but that is a heated topic. Known for it's amazing sandstone and bomber slopers, crimpers, hueco's, rails, and its intense top outs; Rocktown is one of the best bouldering areas in the country.

Rocktown is relatively uncrowded, depending on the season, with a great parking lot that you can camp in for free. It is also a relatively new location with new problems being thrown up quite often. Because of this, many problems are unkown to who established them and their names.

Getting There

From Atlanta:
-Take I-75 North
-Take exit 133 for HWY 136 (Resacca/LaFayette)
-Follow HWY 136 to La Fayette (25 miles)
-Once in La Fayette, go left then right to HWY 193 North
-After 2.7 miles you will see Uncle Jed's Store, make a left on Chamberlain Road.
-Travel 3.3 miles then take a right on Rocky Ln. and Crockford-Pigeon Wildlife Area.
-Follow the road (which will turn into a dirt road) up the mountain through the switchbacks for about 5 miles.
-At the obvious fork, take a right.
-Drive another 1.3 miles and take a left on Rocktown Rd.
-Park at the end of the road

From Chattanooga:
-Drive South on HWY 27
-After you pass La Fayette's Wal-Mart go straight to 27 BUS.
-Drive into La Fayette and take a right on HWY 193 North.
-Follow Directions from Atlanta once on HWY 193 North.

The approach is a real easy trail but is kind of long (about 5-10 minutes).

The Orb V8  GA : Rocktown : The Orb
Start under the roof on low jugs. Then work your way out on the right side of the roof through marvelous slopers, open hand crimps and a sick toe hook. The first crux is in the middle when bumping from sloper to sloper. The real crux is the top out though....[more]   Browse More Classics in GA

CONDITION REPORT

I was gonna go to the Town this weekend, but my friends got there first and said the road was out. I saw pictures and it looks like one of the main roads up Pigeon Mountain was destroyed in the recent Georgia floods. Anyone know what the status is?

Rocktown is fixed! and 100% open for climbing. There is a small ford where the road used to be, but if you have anything larger than a motorcycle it should be fine to cross
