Be warned, regardless of what your customer service rep told you, Travelers only insures items to 10% of the cap of the policy outside your house (unless they just changed the policy, but I doubt it)! I just had a policy with them, it said it clear as day in the policy, 10% cap!. Read my previous post. Read your policy, dont trust a customer service rep!!! The only thing that has any legal authority is that of which is listed in back and white! |

jeremy broombaugh wrote:Yo might have to shop around for the best policy but you'll find something that will fit your needs. One other note - don't skip on getting some type of catastrophic health insurance policy (you can find one for around $90/month) if you break an ankle or arm it will be much better than paying out of pocket for xray, ortho consult, etc let along if you would happen to really get hurt or sick. However keep in mind you WILL be paying out of pocket for the items you said, and your going to not only pay out of pocket, you will probably be borrowing money to pay for it. A catastrophic health plan, AKA a high deductible or HSA plan generally has deductibles and max out of pocket copay expenses totaling around $10,000!!!! So sure, you will not have to foot $35,000 for that complex compound fracture, but you will still have to drop five large. So I suggest getting a supplemental policy as well, some type of cash benefits policy. I have a supplemental cash benefits policy with Assurent Health which runs me about the cost of a few expensive cups of coffee a month. In the event of a fractured bone, it will pay up to about $6,000 which will help cover my deductibles. |

Question: Do you realize why it is ironic when people say "Keep the government's hands off my medicare!" Right...that's exactly what I was saying..... |

thanks, 20 kN, for the warnings. though it threw me into a small state of panic this morning! better to triple check, though... I did just read carefully through my policy, and also got an underwriter on the phone at traveler's. my renter's policy does not have that 10% exclusion, though he said some of their policies do. |

if anybody is in CO looking for cheap health insurance I had a plan through a blue cross subdivision called Tonix for a while when I was unemployed for a few months after grad school. I want to say it was like 140 a month, and only had a $3,000.00 deductbable. And actually I am glad I had because I had to have hand surgery that would have been way more than that. |

BTW on the health debate that's come up, since I've obviously been working on this too... I got a 10,000 deductible plan, paired with an accident policy that covers $10,000 per accident. so anything other than an accident I'll pretty much pay everything for, but for accidents I'm covered. ended up at $90/month total. I'll also be sure to triple check the policy for any 'rock climbing' exclusions. my agent said she checked that for me, but I agree, always best to read the fine print yourself. thanks, again, for the good conversation here- it's helped me a lot! now having taken care of all this 'responsible-adult' stuff, the fun can begin! $10k per accident eh? Who is that through? |
