Suggested Page Improvements to Northwest Territories
There are two kinds of climbing in the Northwest Territories: very epic and very not. The Mackenzie Mountains offer world-class remote alpine rock, but it's accessible only through chartered flights. The rest of the Territory consists of low granite knobs, few of which have any actual climbing. Several areas around Yellowknife, the capital, have been cleaned and bolted, but most of the Territory remains unexplored for rock climbing and road access is very limited. If you can put up with the winter cold, the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park just south of Hay River has miles of ice climbing.
Direct flights to Yellowknife are available from Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, or you could do the 15-16 hour drive from Edmonton. Once in the Territory, there are flights from Yellowknife to the other towns. Charters into the Mackenzie Mountains usually leave from Fort Simpson, but charter flights across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut can be arranged in Yellowknife. Road access to most of the Territory is non-existent.
