Description Suggest change

Rosdina is a fully bolted friction slab that climbs the apron of Sugarloaf's East face all the way to its summit. There is not a single handhold on the entire climb, so bring your most comfortable shoes.

The climb can be broken up into 6 or 7 pitches. The difference will come from whether or not one decides to rope up for the final sections or your ability to stay on route near the end where many rappel anchors and routes all converge.

The following information is from memory and should be verified:

The pitches are rated 16, 17, 17, 17, 13, 17, 12 in the guidebook. IMO, the crux pitch is pitch #2 and climbs 14 bolts on sustained (at the grade) friction slabs. The remainder of the pitches are unsustained with perhaps a few moves at the given grades and require 6-8 draws. One must be comfortable on easy, but runout friction slab to enjoy this climb. Someone comfortable with the style should feel safe with 12 draws.

The rappels are bolted since 2016 and require two ropes.

Alternatively, the climb can be done with a single 70 (60 would maybe work). At the summit, find a steep descent gully facing due south. This faces the adjoining hill to Sugarloaf (opposite side of the mountain to Grosse Spitzkoppe). A bolted anchor will allow a single rap to the western slabs of the mountain which can be hiked down. Bring shoes to walk back. There should be no downclimbing involved so make sure to find the most logical line down this slab.

The start can be difficult to find as the first bolt is maybe 30-40ft off the ground.
