Description Suggest change

This is a beautiful route that forms in a gully across from the Curecanti Monster.

The first 200-foot pitch of blue-green ice begins steeply, then lays back to a ramp leading to rambling bulges, and tops out in low-angle snow. A tree up and right can be used for a belay. A forked tree further back (around 220 feet from the base; with a green rap cord installed 3/2/19) is better positioned for rappel.

100 feet of low-angle snow and ice bulges lead to a short, steep second pitch. It looked to be around 30 feet of WI4-5. There is potential for more ice above.

Location Suggest change

Located 1 mile downstream from where Curecanti Creek drains into the Morrow Point Reservoir, this route is best accessed via the reservoir when frozen. Park on CO 92 near Pioneer Point (which can be tricky as the shoulders are not plowed), descend the Curecanti Creek Trail 1.4 miles to the reservoir (snowshoes recommended), and then hike 1 mile west to the base of the gully (38.4485, -107.4325). Bushwhack 200 feet up the gully to the ice.

Top access would involve trespassing, and it may not be feasible to escape upwards.

Protection Suggest change

A standard ice rack and 2 70m ropes.
