Hello! I am contemplating a move to Duluth… I grew up in St. Cloud and went to school at St. Ben’s, then moved out west and landed in Washingtonton State for a few decades. What is Duluth like these days in terms of outdoor recreation (climbing, mountain biking, trail running, xc skiing, etc)? How quickly can one build community? What’s the yoga scene like? Where might one look for jobs in conservation and/or restoration? Any good neighborhoods for easy access to dog friendly trails? I love getting random opinions from the internet, so I figured I’d start here! 😆 Thanks!!

As a climber and xc skier, it’s Duluth or gtfo the Midwest in my opinion. Plenty of trail access in most neighborhoods, but trailheads are a weird juxtaposition of yuppies with $6k mountain bikes parked next to homeless encampments and used needles. Maybe that’s everywhere these days.

Hello! I have been in Duluth for about 20 years and can say that this is pretty much as good as it gets for a midwest outdoor town. Trail access throughout the city is incredible for hiking, biking, skiing, and more. We also have a lot of climbing in town, as well as an hour or two away.

I personally have found building community relatively easy if you are outdoorsy, but others have said the opposite, so maybe I got lucky?!

Many yoga studios in town, pick your style and there will be something for you.

Conservation corp, City of Duluth, the county, EPA, etc for jobs.

Again, trails absolutely everywhere, many of them full of dogs, so nothing really stands out as it's all meeting that need. :)

Feel free to email if you'd like to dive in deeper with any questions! Cheers!

From an occasional visitor, I love Duluth. It seems like a delightful place for an outdoor enthusiast. We have biked, hiked, ice climbed, paddled, sailed and rock climbed there.
We also have enjoyed the towns cultural activities in and around town.
Im not sure about making connections with others … good luck on your decision.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
