Index camping

Ive heard reports that camping near index has a lot of car break ins and theft. How true is this?  Can we leave our tent up for 2 days or do we risk losing it?

Seems for the most part it was worse a few years ago. Plenty of folks leave tents up nowadays. There seem to be enough people around the parking lot most of the year now that I personally am less concerned about it. 

That said, there are still some interesting folk around and if I was tent camping I might not bring my nicest sleeping bag / put it in my car while out climbing. I would be kind of surprised if your actual tent went missing but would not say it is impossible. 

I just avoid having things like my laptop in my car and make sure no cams rope etc are visible in my car and I always feel pretty good about it. 

You'll run into some strange people no doubt, especially in the winter, but I've never felt particularly unsafe in Index. Gold bar is a different story though...
