Over the past year or so, I’ve taken a great interest in designing tools used to remove stuck cams. I’ve found that, in most cases, the cams that I recover are usable, aside from broken trigger bars from the pirates that tried their hand at the booty before me.

So, after amassing a good collection of cams with broken trigger bars, I started to wonder if there were any replacement trigger bar options on the market.

I scoured Reddit and the Mountain Project forums and found a few basic designs. Unfortunately, they weren’t very durable and broke during the testing phases.

So, I decided I would design and manufacture my own take on replacement triggers. After some feedback on my original design for the BD C4/UL, I had a few people reach out to me about replacement triggers for other models of cams.

After this, requests kept coming in, and I realized that there are probably a good number of people in this community running into the same issues that I was.

This brings us to Infrared Climbing Design.

I've been prototyping for the past couple of months and finally feel like I've designed replacements that are durable, while also not being too bulky and maintaining a similar geometry to the original trigger bars. All triggers are 3D printed using Selective Laser Sintering. I opted to used 3201 PA-F Nylon, for its high tensile strength and moderate flexural modulus. Install is super easy, as the 2 sides just sandwich around the stem, held together with superglue.

In addition to this project that I just released, I'm now designing a retrofit kit for the Black Diamond 4/5/6 without trigger keepers. This kit will sandwich over the existing trigger bar and thumb loop with the proper hardware to secure the cam lobes in their retracted positions; similar to the newer models.

I'd love some community feedback on this project, so please, post any questions or criticisms in the comments section!

Also, I now have a website where these are available for sale: infraredclimbingdesign.squa…

This C3 is quite broken, so the trigger bar doesn't sit as it should.

This is the design for the BD 4/5/6. It has been test fit and is functional, but I don't currently have a broken cam to install one on.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
