Bugaboos Conditions?
|

Anyone been up to Applebee recently and know the snow conditions? How is the Snowpatch/Bugaboo col? Any updates/pics would be great. Thank you |

It is very snowy still. |

Did you do any climbing up there? Trying to head up in a couple weeks... thought this was supposed to be a hotter/drier year! |

I have not been yet, but it is still generally wintery in the Rockies/Purcells alpine. We have had a cold and wet spring, although the bulk of the winter was very dry. The MCRs are a good resource for the bugaboos and surrounding areas: https://mountainconditions.ca/?field_date_value=3 As always, things can change very quickly with a warm week or two... |

Hi Erin! Any chance you're looking for a climbing partner for the Bugaboos? I'm going to be there July 11th-14th and am looking for a partner to climb some of the easier classic routes with. |

Stephanie, I will be out of there by that point unfortunately. Everyone else, thank you for the info so far! Guess I should plan for more snow than I expected. |

I ended up being there July 4-8. On arrival there were only a couple of exposed rocks large enough for a tent, but with more showing up every day. The bugs were in proper alpine conditions, less so ideal "rock climbing only" conditions. So, if you were confident with snow/ice travel/climbing you had a better time. The col is in condition, however seems lean to me given how much snow other things had. Most ridge lines still had significant snow, especially on northern aspects, a notable exception is the Kane route which still had considerable snow. There was a rescue off the Kane route while I was there, I assume based on timing that they were descending from NE ridge of Bugaboo. A group summited Snow Patch vial Wild Flowers and said they encountered minimal snow getting to the decent route. Pigeon still had a fair amount of snow on it. Surf's up looked like it would go. The Howser's still looked like their summit's were in the middle of winter. In all I witnessed 3 cornice collapses and one slide while I was there. Significant overhead hazard was still present, and the objective hazard of most descents was increased from normal. One needed to be intentional about their timing and aspect more than normal for that area. A couple weeks of hot weather has most certainly changed conditions since. Hope this helps, be safe up there. Applebee on 1st day w/ view of Kane View of Applebee the day we left: Snowpatch Bugaboo Col w/ Howsers in background:NE Ridge of Bugaboo: |
