If you could pack up and move somewhere new tomorrow, where would you go?

Bishop / Mammoth to be close to friends, and close enough to family, but just far enough. Salida if I wanted to drop-off the map. |

I'm headed back to Europe next Tuesday to look at more properties for a part-time home/income property there. Will be in Chamonix again, looking at more things since I was there last September. Right now, Cham has my heart. But then its on to the Greek island of Rhodes for all of February. Its unreal how great the deals are over there. Quite the contrast to here in Aspen. |

I’d move to Seattle. I’m a high school student in NYC, and I go to Seattle every summer. There’s nothing I love more than hiking and climbing in the cascades. |

Discussed this exact situation when we retired. Believe but or not, we decided to stay right here in Newark, DE. Nice college town I can ride my bike to, 100 miles of single track out my front door, local climbing within 1:15, Gunks at 3:30. Decent kayaking with good local runs within 1 hour. Philly, Balto, and NYC a quick drive or train ride away, and the van can take us anywhere we want to go. The house is paid for and I have a great deck in the woods with lots of critters and good neighbors. The only thing we miss are sunsets. |

San Martin de los Andes, Argentina. Charming little mountain town in central Patagonia surrounded by forests, big blue lakes & snow capped volcanoes. A bit of a drive to Frey (3h) or Cochamo (5h) but the skiing and fishing would make up for that and it’d be a great home base for longer 1-2 week road trips anywhere in Patagonia. |

My pick would probably Bergen or Stavanger in Norway |

I've got to a place in my career and life where I can live most anywhere within an hour or 2 from a good regional or better, airport. I live in a small farming town now. Its not quaint, more blue collar with a smattering of people like me, work from homes, trades, long distance commuters. Nothing special. Weather could be better, so could the air. I'm an hour or more from the nearest everything with respect to climbing. And yet, willing to make the drives, I have lifetimes of possibilities to pursue within a day's driving, many lifetimes in fact. The thing that keeps me here? My grown kids live near me. They moved to my town to be closer to me and I love it. Even now, contemplating, where might I move to? I have a hard time dreaming of outcomes because the prospect of moving away from my children is frankly, appalling. Which is ironic because that is exactly what I did to my parents - moved far, far away. Anyway, I'd say to you dreamers - DO IT! Set it in motion, before you plant too many roots and get like me and not want to tear them out of the ground. |
