Ice Pitons

I had thought the only manufacturer still producing ice pitons was BD with their Spectres, which have been out of stock going on three years now. Found out DMM produces two sizes of ice piton, a small (Terrier) and large size (Bulldog). They are sold out on DMM's page, but I found they are also on sale right now on some retailer sites.

I’m no expert, but my understanding is that bulldogs are less for ice and more for whatever it is that you’re plunging into on Scottish walls.

Thanks, I picked one up. Plenty of times i would have liked to have this in the north east being runout on frozen dirt with no ice that will take a screw in sight.

I found this old rusty bad boy wedged in a rock on some choss pile no one climbs. Should I add it to my ice rack?

Looks like a modified BD *3 Pecker.

I've carried less useful stuff on my rack for years

Add it to your mixed rack

I picked them up. Here's size comparison against a #1 tomahawk and a Spectre.

73g Terrier; 142g tomahawk

156g Spectre; 148g Bulldog

I have a specter but have never bothered carrying it ice climbing...

I carry the small dmm piton on most expeditions in unknown terrain and the large one when I am doing early season thin ice slab with not much between the good stuff

A good ol' snarg works well for frozen stuff that is a mix of everything and nothing

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
