Gaia using OnX or MP data?
|
Since signing up with a MP, I’ve gotten emails from Gaia addressed to my MP username and delivered to my MP-linked email, neither of which I use anywhere else. As a test I added an apostrophe after my MP username, and sure enough, the email I got this morning had an apostrophe in my name as well. Aren’t OnX and Gaia sort of competitors? Is there any reason that OnX would be sharing MP data with Gaia? |

Buried in the fine print at https://www.adventureprojects.net/ap-privacy: We may disclose or share the information we collect, including personal information... From time to time we may relationships [sic] with certain third parties, and may share name, email and zip code with those third parties. You may opt out of this sharing by logging in to your account and changing your communications preferences; however, opting out will not affect any information we have already shared with such third parties. |

Thanks for reporting this, we are looking into it. |

This is funny. OnX sells your data to third parties. Gaia realized, bought it, and used it on OnX users. Personally I like Gaia way better. For not sharing your/our data, as well as OnX doesn’t really have anything Gaia doesn’t. (Or that was my last understanding..) |

MP user data is not sold to third parties. If you can forward one of the emails you received to support@mountainproject.com we can investigate further. |

Any non-MP ones that come to my MP email address get quarantined, and by them time you’d asked for it to be forwarded your way, I’d cleared that cache. Since we’ve got you here, is there a chance that this data leak is related to all the spam/bot activity? There’s a ton of that on the forums, and anyone clicking those links could serve an entry point for malicious code to scrape user data. Have there been any efforts to implement stronger spam/bot blocking measures during the sign up process? |

This is an important possibility to rule out. There are a number of improvements in the works, including measures to layer in some additional safeguards against spam and bot accounts. |
