Rumbling bald Table rock South Carolina , Pumpkintown never closes to falcons, I think. South face of cedar rock? |

Can’t believe no one mentioned Whitesides. The main face is a reflector oven (do they still make those?), you can literally climb it in T-shirts while someone else ice climbs Star-shine on the north side. |

Jim Corbettwrote: Jim no ones climbs at Whiteside. |

Looking Glass and most walls in Linville Gorge are subject to seasonal closures Jan-Aug for peregrine falcon nesting, so I'd double check with the park and forestry services for closures before planning a trip. It's an endangered species, so you want to give them plenty of space, and the rangers do Not mess around during those times from what I've heard. |

Laurel Knob, Whitesides, Big Green, Suck Creek, The Tennessee Wall, Steele, Yellow Creek. Dylan Valvowrote: That's funny. And true. |

Dylan Valvowrote: Seriously? I often tell people that if I were 25 now I probably would not take up rock climbing—it’s just too lame. Guess that’s more evidence |
|
|
Jim Corbettwrote: Oh no on the contrary everyone is a climber these days. It’s all the rage. Climbing at whiteside is super lame though. |

Seneca! Get on Gunsight to South Peak in white out conditions (with pack and boots.) If you squint a little while doing it, you'll think you are in the alps. Almost alpine for sure lol. |

Dylan Valvowrote: Nah, climbing at Whiteside is sick. Getting there on the other hand... Thomas Kelley on the approach: "The approach to the main cliff is not easy. Allow plenty of time from the parking lot. If all goes well..." |

Sam Schwinghammerwrote: You walk down the side of the mountain after walking half way up it. Getting to the south east face is about as simple as it gets Thomas Kelley is without a doubt the man and I have nothing but respect for his climbs and style. But his book is beyond dated. |

I was told there were some safe multi-pitch moderate sport routes on a slab below Whiteside. I think it was called Raven Cliff. Is it easy to get to? |

Cashiers is such a pretty little town. I really like the coffee shop on the corner there. Someone in line there when I last visited mentioned that people would come from all over in the winter to set up ice climbs to top rope. I was surprised people ice climbed this far south. I would love to try that out one day! |

Lmao took the words outta my mouth |

I'm confused. Do people there not like climbers? |

I was resisting replying to this, but I feel at this point that I must set the record straight. 1. Cashiers, NC doesn't exist. 2. The approach to Whiteside is indeed horrific and is certainly not an example of hiking downhill both ways. 3. Ice climbing just doesn't happen in the Southeast. It's not cold enough, and people obviously don't do it at Whiteside. 4. As a corollary to 3, if you were to climb the SE face of Whiteside in winter, you certainly needn't concern yourself with ice fall if you're climbing on the first warm day after a cold snap. 5. As a corollary to 4, no one climbs at Whiteside anyway. The only people who go there are cavers who drop 900 foot ropes off the top to practice rappelling and jugging. They've never come close to hitting a climber while doing this because, as I said, no one climbs there. 6. If anyone *were* misguided enough to try climbing there, they'd find that it's absolutely terrible and not worth the effort. 7. The best multiptich climbing in the Southeast is bouldering in Colorado, preferably around Boulder itself (it's aptly named). Tell your friends. |

Cashiers doesn't exist? I don't get it. I overheard that the sport climbs were a short hike. The guys who said they put them up said something about a neighborhood. When I look on here it says you park at a different area and not in a neighborhood. The gym was loud so I couldn't hear that well and could have heard wrong. I'm going to buy some quickdraws on Amazon later and a rope. Do you think I need 6 or 12? Is a 30 meter rope good? I've never ice climbed but I order some webbing so I can set up a top rope but I would need to rent gear. I saw ice climbs listed on here for Whiteside. I'm not allowed to drive to Colorado. Also, it's not in the southeast. It's further west. Thanks! |

Since we're not talking about Whiteside...done OR, Traditions, Whipping Boy...any suggestions as to the next (preferably small) step up in route difficulty/commitment? |
