I have the BD vector (the one with the triangle cutouts) and it’s amazing except my GIANT head is just a little too big. Incredibly light and breathable though, can barely tell I’m wearing something save the tight fit. Also have heard good things about the mammut wall rider, but I’ve never touched one (if you care a lot about MIPS).
Hijacking to ask if people have any recommendations for someone with a truly massive head?
Heads are like feet. Everyone's is shaped differently. So your best bet it to try on lots of brands and models to find one that fits your shape of head. Just like with climbing shoes.
I have a Petzl Meteor III. I have an XL head. My wife has a M head and has one too. It's fits us both well.
My friend and his girlfriend both don't fit in the Meteor III and fight over his other helmet that works better for them.
I have the mammut wall rider mips and I wouldn’t get another helmet with mips. Once you see the suspension, you’ll realize that if you have any hair on your head it’ll serve the same purpose as the mips. My opinion is that Mips is good in theory, but in reality the helmet is not “glued” to your head.
One complaint I have is that one of the yellow headlamp hold-downs on the front broke very shortly after I started using it. Interestingly enough, those pieces actually double as a component of the helmet suspension.
When I contacted mammut to get a replacement little yellow piece, they said they didn’t have any but they sent me a brand new helmet instead.
+1 for the Wall Rider. I have the 'old' version without MIPS and I like it a lot. As Dimitri mentioned, the head lamp attachment points are a bit finicky but I really like how lightweight and breathable it is, plus it is quite low-profile so it doesn't feel bulky even while wearing a hood. I also own a Half Dome and that one is definitely the opposite.
I had the half dome and didn’t like the fit either. Got a BD Vision (no MIPS) and love it. Comfortable, light, affordable, and great fit for me personally. I like the idea of the MIPS, but it costs 50% more.
