JTree climbing in August
|
|
Hello everyone! I’ll be in Joshua Tree from the 22nd to the 25th of August. Me and my partner will be wanting to climb 5.7-5.10a sport. I wish to know what your advice is regarding climbing areas that would be in the shade in the morning, and which areas would be in the shade in the afternoon. I got the latest Todd Gordon guidebook and want to make sure we climb in shaded areas given the time of the year that we’re at. I have been to JTree numerous times, but never at this time of the year. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |

Eduardo Zambranowrote: I appreciate the stoke. Anyone that chooses to climb in Jtree in August has my respect. Just be safe, chase shade, and bring more water than you think you need. Personally, I’d head to the mountains. Holcomb isn’t too far away. |

We live out here and climb 2-4 days a week in the evenings. If you wait until 6:00 pm to start, it's pretty nice. You only get one, maybe two climbs in. But, it's better than nothing. We don't sport climb in the Park, so I couldn't give suggestions for shaded climbs. Enjoy and stay hydrated! |

Eduardo Zambranowrote: Go to New Jack City and find shade. |

It's very warm here now. You can climb early in the morning (6 am to 9:30 am). ....then you are done. .........the climbing in the morning is great...but it gets hotter and hotter and ends very warm. In the evenings....go out about 5 Pm.......it cools off , gets breezy and it's wonderful...and ends with the temps nice and the sunset and the solitude this time of year. Middle of the day.....hide. Now during covid....you can't go to library, movies, restaurant, or much of anything. You can go to have an ice cream somewhere or lunch and beer at the outside patio at the saloon. Some restaurants have outside seating and shade . We have an above ground pool at our place;....which helps.....a lot. We have air bnb camping at our place. Contact me if you would be interested in this;.....it's covid safe (very very few people use the bathroom), it has running water, the little pool and it's close to town and you get phone reception. We can give you a big climber's discount. You have the right guidebook for the area, so i know you are good to go with that! If you camp in the Park and want to cool off in the pool here anyways....just let me know......come on over;....you will need to cool off......it's seriously warm. |

Eduardo Zambranowrote: Hey Eduardo - A campground called Indian Cove is where a vast majority of sport climbs are (more than 120 per MP). This area is located about 15-10 minute drive away from the West (main) Entrance. My favorite zone there is called Indian Palisades Corridor (5 min scramble from campsite #3), which gets afternoon shade. |
