In the US Politics have been a part of climbing since at least John Muir. And a driving force in early California climbing and conservation was the Sierra club (public lands, land use, environmental management are all political). Unfortunately a lot of them while pushing for environmental conservation were also pushing for white supremacy. Although Muir may have evolved his views later in life Some people may not have been aware of politics in climbing in the past but that is was more due to their insular environment than climbing as a whole. Saying in the good old days there was no problem is indicative of ones privileged position. When you weren’t the target of discrimination it was possibly no big deal and maybe invisible to you But to the people who have to deal with it, I’m sure it sucks. Put yourself in someone’s else’s shoes with honesty and integrity and perhaps you’ll understand what people are striving for. |
