Looking to take a Intro to Ice climbing class next month.

Does anyone have reviews or opinions of the different options?  Offerings are the same: 2 Days of instruction and climbing at either Lee Vining or June Lake.

The 3 different guides/operators are:

Sierra Mountain Guides: http://www.sierramtnguides.com/program/ice-climbing-101/

Alpine Institute: http://www.alpineinstitute.com/catalog/ice-climbing-introduction-to-waterfall-ice/

Sierra Mountain Center: https://www.sierramountaincenter.com/tours/introduction-to-ice-climbing/#all

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My recommendation--and it's based on experience as well as observation--is to avoid "classes" entirely. Climbers with far different levels of skill and fitness are often placed in the same session in order to make these classes attractively priced as well as profitable. The instructor has to spend a lot more time and attention monitoring belayers and managing relations with other parties, which means less individual coaching; you'll also be spending less time climbing and more time on the ground.

If you don't know anyone who is both experienced and enthusiastic enough to teach you, I advise you to book a private guiding session instead. You'll climb harder and learn faster in one day of 1:1 than you would, at about the same cost, in a 2-day class. Just be sure to carefully choose, and specifically request, your instructor, and be sure to stress to the booking desk what your goals for the day are. And don't forget to bring cash to supplement your guide's meager pay.

I'd be interested in doing a private class and share the costs. 1 instructor and 2 students is a good ratio if the students have good rock climbing knowledge (so we don't waste time learning to tie knots or belay). Interested? Hit me up at lorenzo.riano@gmail.com or 5102921129

While I do agree with Paul's comments, I took the Sierra Mountain Guide course about 10 years ago.  Nothing but great things to say about the course and Howie!  Liked that experience so much I used his group when I updated my Avy I to the AIARE curriculum.  Another great experience with both the course and Jed and Lyra.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
