Has anyone used this ascender in repel mode? I was curious as to how well it actually works. I may pick one up for the opposite hand instead of another petzl ascender. I tried to Google search reviews but I've always had an issue finding them for Grivel products.

I have no direct experience with the A&D, but I can provide my thoughts on rapping with a gigi/ovo, which operates similarly

The A&D slot is 57 x 13.1mm

The Ovo slot is 50 x 12.8mm

I rap with a Ovo on a stiff 10.5mm static rope, both in single and double strand mode in the same fashion that Grivel recommends you use the A&D. With a single strand and two brake biners the rap is still fairly quick, and I prefer to use gloves. Single strand with a single biner is scary fast. Double strand with one brake biner is fast but controllable. Double strand with two brake biners is the most comfortable and not in any way slow.

As the slot sizes between the A&D and Ovo are slightly different, I can't say that they would perform the exact same way, but my guess is that it would be similar (although the longer slot of the A&D may mean less friction). As the A&D only has one slot, chances are it would be a fast rap, depending of course on your rope diameter.

If you have a gigi/ovo, try an single strand rap with your rope of choice with one and two brake biners and that should give you a decent idea. Ovo's are only like $10, so if you don't own one why not pick one up any way.

Hope that helps
