I heard about it at work this morning, someone said a girl was soloing Camelback and fell, but this news article says she was rapping with some friends and fell an "undisclosed" distance. Anyone know who this was or if they are okay?

It was a scrambler's soloing accident near Suicide Direct. She was climbing and fell after stopping for a few minutes. She had no climbing gear or ropes according to PFD.

Hey gang... ... these were kids... not climbers... scrambling up the fin below Suicide.... became stuck.. she was stuck and unable to go up or down upon f.d. arrival... and fell before the boys were able to get her... the guy with her was able to down scramble.. she is critical with multiple sever injuries...not really "soloing"..cause not climbers in that sense...

Wow, what a difference in the two accounts...first, rappelling off of the Monk, then a non-climber falling off somewhere near the Suicide area. What's with that? Camelback accidents hit a nerve with me as I caught an 80-foot factor 2 fall from somewhere off-route on Suicide Direct way back in 1975 (Feb 1st). The AZ Mountaineering Club rescue team came and hauled us off the cliff. We were both 16-year-old beginners and I was belaying the leader directly off of a single 3/4" angle piton (from Bill Forrest, or???) with a Sticht plate. The rope seared a pretty good groove in my hand, but lucky for us the pin held. Camelback can be scary--huge patches of rotten rock, sometimes poor pro (trad), and easy to climb up into trouble. I hope she recovers completely--both physically and mentally.

Damn the local news needs to do some better reporting as to not lump the people with real experience and skill in the same category as the inexperienced and unequipped. Giving a bad name to the actual climbers. But I do wish the girl a speedy and full recovery, that would be some scary shite.

Last time I climbed Suicide Direct a young male was soloing up the first pitch and even past us, in walking shoes. We were on the belay ledge for the second pitch and he just climbed around. A fall would have killed him. I offered to get him down our rope and he soloed back down. Not a climber but he should be. Just to get some sense into him and the latest kids. Sounds like a good catch Daniel.

It's called sprawl. I have taken to saying: "I grew up in Phoenix--before it was Los Angeles". Although, to be fair, I would live in Phoenix before L.A. in a half a heartbeat. Learned to climb on the Carefree Boulder pile (way out somewhere on the distant horizon in the pic)and these days it looks like I'll need to hire a guide from the luxury Golf Course/Hotel/Resort/Spa that owns the property in order to go back and climb some of those old routes.
