If they're not wearing climbing paraphernalia, they usually try to make it clear that they are ice climbers by announcing it to "clueless" locals. Weird. No pack to put that stuff back into? I guess they suit up at the hotel room.

Seemed like he had no idea where the route went and had a small entourage to photograph him. Had the feeling at the time he was putting on a show :/ Yes! It was exactly New Year's day! I think I saw you on the route to the left too. Small world, haha I have a lot to say about some of the responses but no time right now. What I'm most curious about - what I meant to ask everyone before - was: What do you say to someone who you think should not be soloing? What if they're already off the ground?

I will say you see far fewer stickers on cars at real crags than you see at the gym parking lot if that means anything.

I'm not feeling butthurt, just questioning my worthiness, I only seek acceptance... sniff.

Why are you making your small children sit beneath a route with possible rockfall?

Tom, I've been guilty of making myself a walking advertisement board with my helmet. I was just making fun of my n00bety. Stich wrote: Weird. No pack to put that stuff back into? It is all part of a carefully chosen outfit I'm guessing. I once saw a woman with a rope dangling from her daypack at the hot springs and they drove there!

What are you going to do with the rope and your ice tools, wear those too? Some people just like the schlepp all of their stuff dangling from their body like it's against their religion to get a pack large enough to carry their gear.

About 15 years ago, I attended a slide show by a climber (don't remember his name) at the REI in Ft. Collins. He mostly talked about climbs he had done in 5.8-10 range. OK. But what was strange is that he showed up wearing a harness and a gear sling from which hung his gear. He would show a slide where he had placed some gear. He would then take that piece of gear off his sling and mention how his life depended on that gear being able to hold a fall. Strange slide show. . Rob.calm

Good thing it wasn't a child birth instruction slide show.

Maybe not wearing the gear, but having a few key pieces in a pack, to show. Nothing like a life saving gear piece well placed to make a story really exciting. Especially if the gear is damaged in the 'save', and can be shown after the fact. I've saved (in home climbing 'museum') my best life changing pieces, screws, or 'biners ever since I started over 40 years ago.
