New Crag Help?

The UAC in Deer Creek Canyon could really use a concerted clean up effort, namely brushing. The nature of the crag is such that it is a dirt magnet with it piling up for eons behind the sharkskin-like holds. Once cleaned up it'll be a fun little moderate crag. So is anyone up for meeting out there some day to kind of make a social event out of it? Great way to meet some south metro climbers. Maybe all run out to a local happy hour afterwards?

I've found the Makita 18V cordless blower to be a fast, convenient way to clean dirt off climbs. Just tape the nozzle on and clean a wide swath of rock as you rappel. Or if you've got Bosch batteries, they have a cordless blower also.

Since I've enjoyed every fine route you guys put in out there, you can count me in.

It's a great little crag with nothing but quality lines.

The belay stances are harsh, though. I've got a nice bruise on my shin from where a big rock I was standing on, that seemed stable, decided to come loose and bash me in the shin (and clobber my rope! Luckily for Locker it didn't have enough momentum to cut it).

So we could certainly put a bit of time in on the base. And some steps would be great right off the road!

But all of that is back-breaking work, so maybe stick to the brushing. :-)

I'd be interested. Lee took me out there last fall and it is a fun little crag! Would be happy to put in some work at the base as well.

Good idea Mike. Although I am inclined to just go straight to the happy hour.

One of the biggest thorns in my view is the erosion that is occurring right off the road on the approach. It does need to be addressed, but I think we still need to keep a lower profile so steps may not be best. A more gradual incline would be a better answer and then camouflage the current trail start.

Trouble is, we would need to be working near the road right next to the worst curve in DCC. Not very low profile.

I concur that the belay stances could be made more friendly and cleaning the routes is on-going.

Lee- the approach trail is an issue for sure. No idea on what to do there. Maybe we can find a reasonable contour further east to switchback up.

I vote for a weekend date. Although I live so close that I suppose I could do a few after work week days just as easy...

Just a random thought, Father's Day might be far enough out that it will be warm enough there. Maybe. There's probably another 18" of snow at the base of that thing again.

If I get a chance I'll go check it out.

It *was* completely snow-free on Monday. Then Spring got all confused again.

We spent a freezing day there in early April. It was 65 and sunny, surely the crag will be nice? Wrong. 8 to 12 inches of snow still, and rock as cold as ice. But hey, I didn't get sunburned.

Locker just wants to keep it quiet. He doesn't want people coming. :-)

It isn't that dirty, though. There is certainly some gunk on it, but not worse than many places in Castlewood, at least as I remember it.

Any "event" should include car-pooling since parking is limited.

I am pretty flexible with scheduling after next week, trying to plan some weekends away so not sure about the Father's Day weekend yet. Definitely around during the week for evening work, and will come out for a weekend day if I am in town, just keep me posted.

And Locker- its not a lichen-fest, but the holds do have enough dirt behind them to make them a little unnerving, imo.

Especially with that hideous bolt spacing...

In a couple weeks I can get regular about after work sesh's there; say like arriving at 3. I have 2 more weekends with my daughter's LAX schedule; then can hit it on weekends too.

I am going to be there this Sunday and have several brushes. however, my shoulder is in massive pain so I cannot guarantee full participation.
