Is it just me or does Pro Shell not breath worth a damn??? I've got an Arc'teryx Theta AR and TNF Point five pant both with Gore-tex Pro Shell.
Both hard shells shed rain, snow, ice, and (tree branches) amazingly well and really makes you feel like a walking fortress against the elements...
But what about the breath-ability??? When I strip down at the end of the day I find I often have a lot of moisture between the outer layer of my fleece and the hard shell, both in the pants and the jacket.
I know, I Know... "just buy Event" or Dry-Q hard shells...
No worse than any other Gore-Tex or equivalent hard-shell fabric, IMHO.
ProShell is great stuff if you need protection from rain, snow, or wind above and beyond what a decent softshell will provide. If what you really need is a ton of breathability in order to manage moisture from within your layers(i.e., sweat), it's more or less going to disappoint, unless you're willing to manage your layers/venting well enough to prevent getting hot enough to sweat a lot.
When you need the protection of a hard-shell from outside elements, it's sooooo good!
Gore-tex is great at that "walking fortress against the elements" feeling.
eVent, DryQ Elite, NeoShell, and Powershield Pro won't give you that security, but they'll still keep you dry from the outside while actually breathing. I find that these air permeable fabrics feel totally different from Gore-tex and other PU based tech.
Stop looking for security and trust the new tech to keep you dry.
