Hey Brigette, i was tossing around the idea of setting one up for the fall sometime. I thought about coordinating it with the fall Beanfest but i was thinking that might make folks feel a little obligated to participate. I was thinking more along the lines of a cleanup day with a 'play' day afterwards; make a weekend out of it. Would be nice if we could turn it into an annual event.

It's dizzying, the amount of garbage left out there. Allot of it varies but the sobering trend i see is stuff left over from campers; food cans, beer cans, paper plates and picnic supplies in general. Even old tents and tent parts get left in washes and/or partially buried or covered up.

Are you talking about listing the event on the Meetup calendar? If so, can you give me a day or two? I talked with my FS contacts over the spring on this and i'll revive the discussion with them to pick up where we left off.

Basically what i was talking to them about is them (FS) helping/organizing with the large bag pickup. Iow, teams break out an area and clean up into smaller bags. A team lead consolidates into larger bags and shuttles them up to the road where they can be picked up all at once later that day. I have two four-wheelers to contribute that can be used for consolidating bags for cleanup.

Once we've got a date, I'll post it in the meetups and would be happy to coordinate the volunteers.

When does weather down in your neck of the woods hit the 70s, Daryl?

I would like to help, as well.

Please post the date on here, also, as some of us don't subscribe to meetup groups. Thanks.

Bill: I believe that this will be the central organization discussion. The meetup posts will just be a way to spread the word to additional folks that are not on MP.

Well this is looking really good. I've been referred to the owners of the Hacienda San Gabriel in Dragoon Mt. Ranch as a pivot point for recruiting local residents as well. I've got some feelers out for sponsors for trashbags and also for where we would bring the 'motherload' or if we would just be able to leave the big bags up along the road. They recently graded all the roads on the west side so that might be an option if we get the county to spring for WM to come out and do a pickup.

My good friend and coworker's cousin is the Douglas Coronado FS district ranger so once that channel is open we should get some ideas and feedback flowing. Also, I'm contacting the USBP officials for that area in hopes that they might be able to provide feedback on some 'hotspots' we could focus on within the Stronghold area.

Brigette, i have to get with you on the restaurant thing. That's a great idea. Would be great if we could get enough sponsors from Tombstone to chip in for a free lunch for everyone that turns out.

Date... yes. Sounds like a couple folks have date restrictions so if anyone with preferences can post them, say, in the next 48 hours or so, we'll digest that and pick a date. I hate for it to end up being too close to Beanfest as this will force distant people to have to make the commute twice within a short time frame. Maybe if beanfest is the weekend before Halloween vice the weekend of as last year we could shoot for the middle of November? Say around the 14-15th? Snakes would be pretty much back in hiding and the temps should be really pleasant.

I may have one other volunteer here at work that owns a couple four wheelers to help shuttle people, trash, water, food around. If anyone has a disabled or walking impaired friend that wishes to help, the ATV option might be an answer.

Thanks all for the responses... it's really good to get some idea of how many might show up.

More to come!

I'm thinking it might be nice to knock on the doors of some of the Arizona outdoor retailers, let them know about our plan (once it's more defined), and see if they'd be willing to donate some goodies for door prizes for the clean-up crew.

But I wouldn't want to hit them up at the same time as the Beanfest crew and limit the chances of their donating to Beanfest...

Of course, this wouldn't be a crowd of just climbers, so it wouldn't look like the same group of folks hitting them up twice...

(The problem with being a gemini is that I'm often my own devil's advocate.)

What do you think? I'm willing to do the legwork.

I wonder if your connection at the FS knows personally any of the restaurant owners in the Tombstone/SV area that might be more amenable to donating food to the cause. I could start with them.

I haven't hit up any restaurants yet but I've contacted the local retailers, SummitHut and R&R regarding sponsorship. I've also hit up some of the online gear vendors i've done business with in hopes of a handout. I also hit up RedBull, Petzl, BD, Trango, NE Ropes/Maxim, Wild Country and Mamut. Hey, it doesn't hurt to ask! :) I'm trying to get enough to have t-shirts made up.

If you have the time and PR muscle to flex on the effort, i would be forever grateful. Being stuck down here in SV kindof puts me off the beaten path for the Tucson retailers and/or potential restaurants that might contribute.

Thanks so much Brigette!

I had another thought: Base the cleanup effort out of the Sweet Rock area and set up some flood lights afterward for a night climbing event. I guess it really wouldn't be night climbing at that point but maybe do away with the lights and do some headlamp climbing and a big cookout(??).

Edit.. Ah, Access Fund.. .i missed one. ;)

my vote is for nov 7-8 or 21-22...just my two cents in the matter.

Brigette Beasley · · Monroe, WA · Joined Sep 2008 · Points: 275

I vote for 11/7-8 also. Looks like every other weekend in November, except for Thanksgiving weekend, I have a horse show or clinic.

Okay gang, just heard back from Black Diamond. They're sending booty for raffle fodder. Got a bunch of other responses back from some big names as well. I'm getting stoked about this but hoping i didn't bite off more than i can chew here. Still designing the t-shirts but the sponsor logo real estate is getting crunched on the back. (that's a good thing though).

T-Shirts will be free, as will be the food and refreshments as long as enough contributions come in. So far so good.

As far as a time, 11/7-8 works. I need to get cracking here.

One big favor here; anyone else interested in or knowing of anyone interested in coming out that can rsvp (for lack of better term), please do so. Trying to get a head count to send out an update email to all our potential sponsors.

Thanks again everyone!!

If 11/7-8 is set in stone, I'll start spreading the word via the Meetups/gym and let you know how the response looks.

You can count me in for two at this point.

All: Daryl's working his butt off on sponsors and the t-shirt. Anyone got the time and talent to crank out a flyer? I'll be glad to have it printed and get it sent out.
