Due to a work conflict my previous partner had to back out of our Tower trip. I'm looking for a climbing partner (or two or three!) who is comfortable with trad leading to do the Tower with me.
I've been climbing for the past five years and leading for the past three. The majority of my leading has been done in Minnesota and the Needles and I have a couple of multi pitch climbs under my belt. I trad lead into the 5.9 range but will follow anything up to a 5.10c. I figured we could take a day and warm up on the shorter single pitch climbs and then attempt to summit the Tower after that. Im very interested in leading El Cracko Diablo.
If the weather turns nasty we could always hit up Rushmore or the Needles.
So anyone interested in accompanying me to the Tower?
Was up there last week. Summited the tower via El Cracko great climb, but terribly hot. Start early. We got there around 6 and it was still pretty hot, but doable.
As far as the other areas are concerned. You can still camp for free right by the needles at Poverty Gulch (it's in the guidebook) even though the sign says "No Motor Vehicles, NOLS Excepted." Some 20 yr regular of the area said he talked to a ranger about it and they just havent taken that sign down, but it is cool to camp there.
Also if you want some good limestone sport climbing hit up Spearfish Canyon. It was my favorite spot out of the Rushmore/Needles/Cathedral Spires area and is actually closer to the Tower. There is a ton of development going on up there and I wish I could spend a week up there.
I am planning on starting the route either early morning or early afternoon to avoid the sun. I will be bringing three liters of water in my big wall rack so I should be ok.
If I find a partner I will defiantly hit up Spearfish Canyon. I have friend who has climbed there and can't stop talking it up!
