*Hot take* Ticking lead/fell/hung is like spam. Mtn project should get rid of it

lead: no you didn't lead the climb fell: no you probably didn't fall, you just hung on the rope hung: yes you hung on the rope and then repeatedly tried the move that stopped you without being able to do the move. In my opinion you should lower and let your partner give it a go. While you are being lowered look at the holds and try to be more efficient when you take your second burn. |

In contrast to the OP, I wish there were also TR fell/hung and Follow fell/hung options. As someone who started climbing in my 40s and who has rapidly evolved toward a trad-dad vibe, I find the MP tick-list to be an incredibly useful journal of all of my outdoor climbing as I learn and grow. It's great to return to a crag a year or two later and be able to look at my tick list and find that I can now send a route that I previously I fell on and couldn't get cleanly. I couldn't care less about anyone else's ticks, but I love seeing and tracking my climbing growth and progress in spreadsheet charts based on my MP data. I also find the ticks super useful when returning to a crag that I don't remember well as a way to recall details about routes done in the past and help decide what we'll attempt now. If what you care about is just "sends", then download the data and filter to only the categories you care about. The feature isn't called "sends" though. "Tick" is a pretty vague term to many climbers and the feature is very useful in many ways to people who care about things other than the glory of showing off a send or an on-sight. Maybe instead of trying to limit the tool to just your particular use-case it would be better to advocate for the various lists and views of "ticks" to get selectable filters. |

Apparently MP has "feature request" https://www.mountainproject.com/help-hub -> "Feature Request" I created feature request for adding private comments on routes - upvote it if you think it is something you would like to see. There are a few similar requests on the list - unfortunately, I only noticed a couple of similar entries after my request. |

Ticking used to mean something. It’s a damn shame how far from the send we’ve allowed ourselves to wander. If you’re ticking your hangdogs, might as well tick your gym ascents too. Bachar is rolling over in his grave |

Wahhh people are ticking their climbing and being honest about the style they did it in, wahhhhh |

Bachar clearly had opinions about how to use mountain project |

Nothing better than clicking the recent ticks on a climb and seeing a hit list like this. |

I just posted over in the discuss mountain project thread about adding a filter to the ticks list. Not sure if it would be a hassle for the devs but seems like it would make everyone happy. |

This idea that one can "tick" a climb they haven't done yet strikes me as odd. A tick should be a clean, no falls ascent. Specify lead or TR or boulder. Everything else is projecting. |

Joey Allison wrote: Although I agree someone should teach them how to do "Lead/Fell/Hung" and just set the pitches to 16, I still don't see how or why this bothers you. How long did it take to scroll past this? Like .001 seconds? |

Jerry: You ticked Lead fell hung? You didn't send it, ticking used to mean something. George: It says ticks, not sends. I tick everything Jerry, I'm a ticker. Jerry: You even ticked DNF! George: Well I got on it, I want a record. Jerry: So you're saying if I could get on Silence, just establish on it, I could tick it on mp? George: I would. Jerry: John Bachar would be rolling in his grave. Kramer can you believe this! Kramer: I don't tick, that's how they track you. |

I will now print out the list of ticks for my routes and keep them in a nicely bound book at the base that I will refer to as the "guest register". |

Gianni, that is totally classic!! |

Cool thread. For me personally I am with Kristian and others, mostly OGs, who feel it doesn’t count unless it is a send. In fact, it’s all about the onsight send. That’s what floats my boat. I do read people’s tick lists. People soliciting advise, I try to read their ticks before responding. It helps tailor the response. I am trying to be helpful.

My favorite reason why it should remain the way it is: I like pulling up a route and scrolling through the ticks and processing the infomation very quickly and visualizing the real world encounter from the info in my head as if I had a surveilance camera aimed at the route and I'm watching it on fast forward. Its fun you should try it. Visualizing the hang dogs are the main reason its fun. |

Big Red wrote: I'm about to visit the RRG for the first time and wanted to see what routes people I know have been on. Then I see hundreds of hundreds of LFH nonsense. People ticking LFH with something like "didn't get past first bolt lol lol". My original post is that it looks like spam, it's junk mail in tick format. Even the 14c's get 5.11 climbers ticking LFH. I would probably track my attempts/document beta if it didn't show up on my bar graphs, so like someone mentioned LFH should be changed to be something like a climbing journal |

I think we can all agree that if you're a sport climber and documenting everything that's the coolest. And everyone who hasn't been keeping a long storied tick list of every climb, send or struggle, is just jealous that they haven't been. I suppose if you have a long storied tick list of just sends that is actually kind of the coolest. But regardless if you're ticking it after just completely flailing on it / failing to make one move / couldn't get past the first bolt, yeah that's some junk keep that shameful stuff between yourself and your belayer |
