*Hot take* Ticking lead/fell/hung is like spam. Mtn project should get rid of it

I think people over do ticking lead/fell/hung. I hate when looking at ticks and 90% of them are nonsense lead/fell/hung. I think mtn project should make lead/fell/hung only show on that persons account. Leave the publicly displayed information to only be redpoints, onsights, and pinkpoints

I feel ya. But sometimes those ticks have the best move by move beta.

Why is fell\hung useless and a send useful? What are you looking at ticks to learn?

I feel like fell/hung ticks are fine, but they shouldn't be displayed in the tick graph on your profile. Sometimes I like to check out someone's ticks when using Partner Finder, and I've been mislead more than once. If I ticked every 5.13 I've hangdogged on, my profile would indicate I'm a crusher (which I am not).

What kind of pervert is browsing other people's tick lists?

I stand accused, but I agree. Different styles of ascent should really be split out in some way, so TR, lead fell hung, redpoint, solo, etc can be seen at a glance. Maybe change the shading of the bar for each category of tick. I'm not going to stop ticking "lead: fell/hung" because I like writing my beta there and it is important to me to keep a record of what I've climbed and who I was with when I climbed it, but it'd still be nice to have a clearer idea of how someone climbs by glancing at their page.

For the tick page for individual routes, maybe a good compromise would be to be able to filter the ticks by style. You could do this manually by downloading the CSV of the ticks already, but having it built into the website would be nice.

Have you heard of a website called 8a?

Idk dude, 99% of my lead fell / hung ticks I still made it to the top of the route, so I feel good about ticking em. Usually I'll annotate the details. I guess it depends what a tick means to you.

Plus if you're falling and trying the crux multiple times you actually climbed more vertical distance, assuming you reached the anchor, than the person who sent it. It's a question as old as time; what's more impressive- the climber who flashes first go, or the climber who has to battle for it ...

I think that kind of documentation provides excellent insight into whether I'd like to climb with someone. If there's a large number of ticks with "lead/fell/hung, I'll look for a different person. That's not my kind of fun climbing day.

Quite a double standard though since I stopped caring to keep a tick list.

I’ve replied to a similar thread in the past about this, recycling here…

I tick attempts because I find it interesting to be able to go back and see a history of, more or less, everything I’ve ever climbed outside.

I track multiple attempts on a climb via adding one tick for the day, then adjusting the pitch count to reflect the number of separate tie ins. So for example, if I fall on an onsight attempt, fall on the second go, then send on the third, I tick Lead - Redpoint (3 pitches). I settled on this format years ago. I find it’s a nice balance between not polluting the tick page with dozens of separate Lead - Fell/Hung entries, while also allowing me to keep a history of how many attempts I have on an individual climb. This makes the concept of a ‘tick’ for me personally more analogous to ‘number of sessions on this climb’. This is certainly not the traditional definition of the word, but as stated above I don’t care. I don’t claim this to be the best system, but it works for me.

I do think that the tick display could be changed to better handle multiple ticks by the same person, especially if they’re all in the same day. As referenced earlier, I do think that adding a separate tick for each individual attempt can make the list appear ‘noisy’, however I think that this is more of a data display issue than anything. A few remediations come to mind, but I think the simplest is this: If a person has multiple ticks on a climb, only show the most recent in the tick display. There could be some text that indicates the number of additional ticks they have on the climb.

The longer I climb, the more satisfied I am with my decision to track climbs this way. I really enjoy being able to see everything I’ve ever touched outside, I’ll often find myself reminiscing about past climbing days/moments based on my own ticks that I stumble across

I use ticks to remember what I've done. Seeing the long list of fell/hung finally completed by a redpoint makes me feel happy. It also helps me remember when I come back to a crag after a year or more what exact routes I've enjoyed trying.

Agreed! If it bothers you looking at other people's tick lists, maybe stop looking? 😂

I think I even have some DNFs in my list.  I suppose that'd really make some people blow a fuse.  Now that I think about it, I should probably sit back and think of more DNFs to add.

Even though I find your comment a bit "Old Man Yells At The Sky", I do wish that MP had an option to make personal route/tic comments that are not visible to the public. I feel it would definitely clean this mess up. Also, I would appreciate having a "repeat" tic option as well.

People use ticks in a lot of different ways.  That’s probably not going to change.  But it would be nice if the data was sortable.  “I got on this and flailed” is very different than “send!”

I just started really using ticks as a tool this year. It’s a useful way to keep track of what I’ve done and what piqued my interest.

I do scan people’s ticks if I’m considering climbing with them.  It’s not always helpful, but sometimes their ticks and to-dos are similar to mine.  It would be useful if there was a more organized way to discern sends from flails and a general log of climbs experienced as well.  An actual beta classification would be handy as well all with search ability.  Honestly, what’s there now is quite useful and spending a few minutes will often tell you a lot about the person.  It could use an update, but part of MP’s charm is the 2015 feel of the site.  I’ll take first iteration optional data entry to ads and notifications and short-form video.

I usually avoid ticks that aren't sends for that reason, but if I'm in a new area and want to go back and see what I tried I will add them. I hate that they show on my graph though.

There's even one that says "Lead" with no other indication.  Just try the first few moves..... call it a lead
