Any recs for kid-friendly crags in Leavenworth? Defined as short, relatively easy approaches, and base areas that aren't perched on the side of a cliff. We'll be a party of four adults and two toddlers (2.5–3 yrs old) so the kiddos will be on our backs for the hike in and don't have risk awareness yet to be near big drop-offs. Something akin to the Alabama Hills (CA) is the ideal kinda crag we're looking for. Primarily interested in roped climbing but we'll take bouldering recs too! Thanks in advance!!

I wouldn't want to carry kids up that steep path.

I take it that the 3 year olds won't be climbing. There aren't as many options as I thought there might be. Your best bet is Rolling Stones and Boneyard area low in the canyon near the Refrigerator boulder.. It's a four or five minute and mostly flat, easy walk. Flat shady area with many fun mellow routes,  For bouldering try Barneys Rubble boulders, the Forestland boulders and Underwear Rock/The Sword area.

Awesome, thanks both! Yeah the kids won't really be climbing — they'll scramble around and we'll let them hang and swing, but neither is in "climb a route" mode yet.

I lived and climbed in Leavenworth for over 10 years, then moved to SE Idaho and had a kid. Last year we visited family in Leavenworth with our kid, who was 3 years old. We quickly realized that most of the crags in Leavenworth are pretty bad for little kids. There is often a steep spot with a big enough drop to be real bad. Or they have a sizable uphill approach which is also not perfect for little kids.

I'm sure there are some good ones, but nothing that I found on our trip back.

If you want to take a trip to the most kid friendly climbing area I know of. Check out City of Rocks in Idaho. Short flat approaches, super solid rock, tons of fun little things to scramble up with them

I took my 3 year old and 5 year old to Bikini Boulders a few weekends ago (an easy toprope area in Icicle Canyon, Leavenworth). It was my 3 year old's first time outdoor rope climbing and my 5 year old's first time topping out. Very fulfilling and proud dad moment- their first outdoor climbing experience!

The flat area at the base of the climb is a excellent picnic spot next to the river (with slowish water next to the crag). They had a blast playing in the sand, bouncing around on the rope, and mostly trying the bottom 10 feet of the climb. I set up a top rope on the far left 5.0 route which I think is the best for kids (but there is a few other 5.0-5.4 routes which I practiced some trad placements on). The exact route is honestly a little tricky for toddler route finding, so they might only get up 10 feet or so. But it was more about getting a taste of what a rock trip feels like. The shadowy flake/slot on the far left is what my 5 year old took to the top.

The approach takes literally 5 minutes from the road. Its steepish for a toddler for 1 minute, but my 3 year old did fine. You can always pick them up and carry them. As you know, just take it slow, prioritize their experience over actually sending the route, and bring lots of snacks to make it special. All in all, an excellent experience and I highly recommend!

XY crag, guides wall, barneys rubble

8mile rock if the kids arent climbing... or else they may have a difficult time on classic crack   approach via the campground

In general, the cragging options are, unfortunately, not great for kids but many bouldering areas are great.

Ropes: I had a fun day with my family (wife + toddler) and another 2 adults with a baby at Clamshell. big wide safe base area that has shade. Climbing in the sun however (typical lower-mid Icicle). Direct approach from the road is steep but not far. Alternatively you can park at Forestland bouldering lot and hike in that way. That may be easier - not sure if its shorter per se, but certainly flatter.

Bouldering: Many great options - in the Icicle, Forestland is great for kids, lower Mad Meadows, Sword area (if shade is important this is a good spot), Jerry Garcia, Fridge, etc. All of those are less than 2 minute approaches. In the Tumwater Swift Water is great for kids (both sides of the hwy), and if you're into a 15-20min flat walk the Forest/Beach boulders on the Pipeline/Red Bridge trail are great kid zones with shade. In general, most the the go-to bouldering areas are excellent for kids. The rope climbing.... not so much, but there are some spots here and there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
