Stoney Point Wet Rock Warning

I’ve noticed international (specifically European) people don’t seem to care about waiting to climb California and Nevada sandstone before rain stops. Especially this winter I’ve encountered European people at the garden and at Stoney pulling hard on on our already fragile stuff. Smh I thought the rei class people were bad.

1-2-26….. it’s raining right now.

I find that most people who climb on wet sandstone are ignorant about OUR stone.

How weak it can be when it’s soaked. Most climbing stone only gets slippery when wet. Stoney stone gets so soft one can literally break it with your hands. Only when it’s fully dried out does it qualify as stone.

I routinely go and walk around when it’s raining and I convince folks to go somewhere else.

We have tons of options that are not that far away.

Thanks for the kind words. I started climbing 53 years ago at Stony- just the thought of that makes me shake my head- and yes I do sort of love the place, the people and the climbing.

See you all later.

I had some errands to do Thursday in Chatsworth. So I stopped by the Point to enjoy a beer and a smoke and to see what is up.

Well the sun is shining, the wind is blowing and it’s starting to dry out. The mud is gone at least.

I would not go there this weekend but if the weather holds It will probably be good next weekend.

Stay tuned

It’s dry…. The ground passes the dirt test but it’s still sort of damp in the back canyons.

Use your best judgement

See you all out there

Just want to bump this to the top.

Stoney is 100% dry.

It’s climbing well and the nite bouldering is great.

I just want to mention the fact that the weather reports, temperature, is usually wrong.
Stony, sitting below Santa Susana pass, is usually about 10-15 degrees cooler than reported.
The sea breeze kicks in about 4 most days.

See you all

Yesterday I did the dirt test and it still sorta wet.

But today was hot and windy, so it probably will be good to go on Saturday.

Did it rain in chatsworth yesterday? Couldn’t tell from weather reports. There was a slight drizzle here in LA. Wanna go today but obviously not if it’s wet out.

(Nm looks like it sprinkled a little today. Disregard)

On Sunday we had really heavy fog and light drizzle.
Yesterday was fine and I’m getting ready to go out today.

Thank you for caring
