Because they looked sick and deserved a test run at a good price.

That's a valid reason!

Dude, I'd hold onto these tools. Like Tick says,  There will come a day when you will want them. You're just gonna get stronger and eventually the mixed climbing will come calling. If you want something else for the meantime, I've been seeing lots of nomics and x dreams for around 300 on here.

Seems the forecast tools are the dmm cortex franken pick you are looking for since they have the same basic design but take petzl picks out the gate...

I can’t afford forecasts because I spent all my money on DMM cortexes.

How well do they swing?

Dude, you should hold on to them and get psyched to climb more ice! Who cares if your tools are overkill? They're totally rad, and if you're stoked to keep at the ice game they are fantastic tools. You can totally grow into them but it might take a bit more than 1 minute of hanging 3 times a week lol. I took 3 years to get to the point where I can get after it.

Swing great but the ice tech picks that come with the tools are designed for Scottish mixed and are a little more aggressive in their angle. You know more for turf, biting into ledges, hooking mushrooms. I would say they swing like nomics but ice tech pick performs like a grivel standard tech machine pick. Meaning the hit rate on first time sticks is way lower. Beartooth said they were going to look into third party which would be sweet but would officially make these tools more expensive than my car. I was fucking around with the tools last night and found out that the tools receive pur’ice picks and hammer naturally without any modification… not sure if on purpose but will try that out this weekend to see their performance. If DMM made that decision to design tool secretly round incorporating pur’ice then this tool might not be for sale by the end of the weekend lol. Check it out:

Stas Beskin has said he liked the tools, but hated the picks. If you get enough people that want Kruk picks for it, I’m sure Stas can make it happen.

I’m curious how the petzl picks work out.

Tools still for sale.

Petzl Picks fit but not at the correct attack angle FYI.

They are expensive because if I don’t sell them I’m going to custom mill pur’ice picks into them and blow everyone’s mind. These things don’t flex at all. No spike. Can build anchor out of them. The neck of tool is tapered so it can cam into cracks and constrictions. The tool will last nuclear holocaust.

Also regarding economics, I got these imported for roughly the same price on a wild deal from a Scottish outfitter. So it’s really just catch and release. Cheers!

cool thread, folks!

Matthias,

Nice tools! If you have access to a drill press, cobalt drill bits will take care of a petzl pick. I've drilled through them before to fit them in my Grivel pattern tools (actually, Howie picks, which are harder AND tougher).

by the by, I just overlayed the picks on each other in photoshop (I don't have either pick in my hands). The problem you may have is that one hole partially overlaps . Meaning you can likely use the rear hole on the petzl pick, but depending on the pick angle you choose, it might be awkward to drill the front hole unless you sort of fixture the bit so it doesn't wander (you can actually use one pick clamped to the other for this), or use an annular cutter. You can also put a slug in the hole that's overlapping partially so the bit doesn't wander when you drill the new hole. It's important to have a pilot hole!!! Message me if you want more unsolicited advice! hahah

anyway. have fun! those are gorgeous tools! I love that they're 1 piece - no possibility of head wobble.

Haha your awesome advice comes the day I packaged them up and shipped them off.

I’m hoping he reads this and can apply that workflow to the pur’ice picks if he so chooses! They are indeed beautiful tools but they belong in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing. Until then I’m happy to swing my nomics until they prove to be at their limit. That doesn’t seam likely to happen anytime soon!

ah, kind of you and glad you sold them! Hard to go wrong with Nomics, anyway. basically every other tool is a copy of them!

godspeed on your journey, Sir!
