Petzl Connect Carabiner

I just got a Connect as a gift and am a new user. In the past, I have just used a clove hitch and the rope to secure myself, or a sling girth hitched through my belay loop for rappel stations. I am debating what carabiner would be best to use with this piece of kit, and what you have found is ideal. It came with a Tanga blocking bit, and I see Petzl promotes using an SM'D carabiner. I am leaning towards an Edelrid Pure Slide locker as it seems more convenient to open and lock with one hand. Let me know any top tips, best use options, and your experiences if you can.

Cheers!

I use an HMS magnetron, and it's fantastic, but those are hard to come by. If I didn't have one I would use the Edelrid slider. Basically an easy to open locker is ideal as a lot of the potential downside of those 'biners is mitigated or irrelevant in this use case. In particular I find it very useful when rapelling multipitch; on the way up sometimes it's handy and sometimes I'll still use a clove hitch.

The oval slider is by far my favorite biner for this application. 11/10 can't recommend it enough.

Ive got the Petzl OK Ball lock carabiner in mine. Once you get used to it, it’s really easy to open one handed

What about the oval do you like?

Large basket allows for use of anti-crossloading bits and pieces. The slider mechanism feels secure enough while being super easy to use. Ovals are distinct from other biners which is easy to feel on a harness and visually distinct at anchors. Nice and big but not overly so. Symmetry of an oval prevents scary shifting noises that can happen with an offset-D. The size and geometry means the the gate doesn't interfere with the adjust regardless of how it shifts around.

SM'D user here. I don't have any issue with it. Opens easy with one hand for me. I guess I never really think about it so it must be good, because it is not a source of frustration. YMMV.

SM’D or Edelrid slider. Pick one and move on.

I have a BD Vaporlock magnetron and it is perfect. If I couldn’t find one of those I’d go for a edelrid slide like the others mentioned.

I use a wire gate oval mostly cause it is primarilly used for positioning. A slider for when used as an anchor.

SM'D twistlock, but might try a slider someday

Camp Photon locker is not great with the Petzl connect.

I use a DMM Shadow screw gate and don't have any complaints

Wouldn’t recommend the slider I feel it opens too easily to be very safe

+1 on the slide lock. I like the kiwi slider over the pure

I use the SM'd double locker (red gate) as I found the triple locker to too much of a pain to open one handed. The double locker is easy with a bit of practice and I can even open it with a single finger on the gate at nearly any angle now.

I used a DMM Shadow with the v1 connect adjust.  For v2 it feels like the metal attachment is just marginally thicker which makes it feel too small, so I'm currently testing a DMM Perfect-O to see if it behaves any better.

I use the slide locker. It’s easier to operate if there’s a bunch of stuff in or around whatever it’s clipped to,

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
