Gauging New Guidebook Interest

Thanks to all of the folks who came out! That was super cool and I'd love to start hosting more community meet-ups out there like that if folks are interested. Let me know if that's something you'd be keen on and I can start trying to plan to do those every month or two.

The July update just went out on the patreon - a reminder that no payment is necessary, and it's the best place to find info on all new routes established since the publishing of the guidebook. Patreon Link

August update is live - thanks to all of the folks who helped contribute this month! Sendtember and Rocktober are here, I hope to run into some folks taking full advantage out in Wonderland!

Free patreon folks! It's free!!! Sign up to get updates on new routes since the guidebook launched.

Been up a couple of times now to your Wild Things and Dystopian walls. Going to new crags is our thing before they become super popular. Everything we have touched so far has been well crafted and thoughtful. Thanks for that. I guess I need your book. I'm getting a little spun out by the layout of the land up there and finding the other sectors. Oh.. and where is the closest primative overnight camping. Totally want to be respectful to land owners with that. We are quiet and want to be as non intrusive as possible. Pitches brother!

Glad you've enjoyed it! Next time you're up there, once you're close to the crags, look closely at the bones in the trees. They have some (quickly fading) burnt labels on them that will help you navigate around. It's a huge area though, roughly 5 sqmis. There's something like 27 named crags out there (including, IMO, one of the single best crags in the front range for a 5.10 climber), and I'd be surprised if any of them ever become popular - so a lot for you to explore!

Closest camping is somewhere between 0.5mi and 1mi in either direction from the Miller Gulch Trailhead. If you keep following north on EOS Mill and then take a left on 552, there's 7 numbered (first come, first served) spots along that road. If you head south from Miller Gulch and follow the left fork to head east on EOS Mill road, there's a few more numbered sites on that road until it eventually merges into 550/Redskin Creek Rd (recently rennamed "Ute Creek") where there's a ton of numbered, first come, first served spots.

Thanks for the beta and the new pitches. If we can help, let me know.

Frustrated I need to say this but wanted to put it here: there’s been a recent rash of stealing lower-off hardware and bone cairns around Wonderland. I don’t know who feels the need to take painted steel carabiners, but if you need lower-off hardware or steel biners for some reason, just reach out to me. I’d much rather directly give them to you from my stock than get to an anchor and find that it’s bare hangers.

Disappointing to see this, given how small of a climbing community it is out there and the fact that the crags we’ve been seeing it at are only ones mentioned in the guidebook and on the Patreon. Please leave the area better than you found it, not worse.

That is messed up. No wonder I have been bumbling around a little. Those bones are critical for getting around.

And missing lowering anchors? I just ran into that up there. That is exactly why we cant have nice things. We will bring some from now on to leave behind. I wasn't born for these times and I beg to differ Tal. This place will become popular. My wife and I are having a blast up there. Thanks.

Happy Rocktober folks! After a false start courtesy of some Patreon issues, the September updates are now published. The tl;dr is more focus on the Bath House, and Wonderland is getting some new hard lines!

With temps dropping, my focus is going to shift back into Wonderland South/North. I’d like to finish up the trail work down there this season (I.e. a lot of log highways and cairns) and work on making the buck gulch region a bit more of a destination rather than a side quest for only the most devout Wonderland follower. And with the new dental dome trail, I may throw in some more drytool and normal rock climbing lines there this winter

If you’d like to get involved - whether that’s helping build trail, put in new lines, or just get some traffic in on routes - hit me up.

I was considering making an email list for folks who want to be notified of “work days”, where I’d send out a note when myself or someone else is going out to do work that would make sense for other people to join in on. What do you guys think about that?

I'd love to be put on that email list, I also have some trail tools I'd like to donate.

Awesome Tal! I’d also love to join a worklist email!

Ok trying something new - I created a Google Group so I can just send an email to the distro when I'm doing work days - and once we know it works, will open it up to others in the group to do the same. Try seeing if you can join the group here, and if not, send me a message and I'll try and manually add you.

https://groups.google.com/g/climb-wonderland

EDIT: Instructions to join if you don't have a google account

  1. Open your email client and compose a new message.
  2. In the To field, enter the group's email address, but add "+subscribe" before the "@" symbol. For example, for a group named "mygroup@googlegroups.com", you would send the email to "mygroup+subscribe@googlegroups.com".
  3. Leave the subject and body of the email blank.
  4. You will receive a confirmation email with a link to finalize your subscription

Email address is: climb-wonderland@googlegroups.com so you'd send the blank email to climb-wonderland+subscribe@googlegroups.com

Been such a joy to keep running into people out and about around Wonderland! Hopefully the new bone cairns are helpful for navigating around the Castle View region. I was down in Wonderland South a couple of weeks ago and surprised at how good of shape the trails down there are as well - must be getting more traffic than I realized/expected!

The October update is live, as is our first work day through the above Google Group. If you're keen on getting involved, shoot me a message (or take a look at the update for details). I'll likely have another work day or two scheduled for November that are more route development oriented. I'm getting in a shipment of 100 bolts/hangers for the rest of the year, let's close it out on a productive note. See you out there!

Guidebooks are back in stock! If you have been waiting for the restock, holler at me to get your copy.

Reminder, since it’s Veteran’s Day: If you donate to Crux Wilderness, you get a free digital copy of the guidebook. Two birds with one stone - seriously, it’s a win-win!

As we wind down for 2025, I wanted to give a quick overview of the year for Wonderland (subject to change as I review my very shoddy notes)

In 2025 we:

  • Opened up 4 new crags and 2 entirely new bouldering zones
  • Completed a smattering of trail improvements in all 4 Wonderland regions, enabling car-to-crag trail access in some manner (cairn path, log highways, etc.) to all but 5 of the 29 formations in the region
  • Installed roughly 80 new routes spanning 5.3 to 5.14 across 16 formations, with 70 of those happening since the guidebook published in March
  • Opened roughly 40 new boulder problems spanning V0 to V11
  • Whittled down the count of total plated steel bolts/hangers in the region via rebolting down to 13. Meaning we should be a fully stainless bolts/hangers in 2026 and likely one of the very very few climbing areas of meaningful size in the country to be able to say that.
  • Most importantly - raised $1150 for climbing related non-profits though digital guidebook donations, including the Access Fund, ASCA, BCC, PPCA, and Crux Wildernes Therapy.

And I do mean "we" when I say this - Wonderland has been such a wonderful community effort, and it's been an absolute joy to run into you fine folks down there over the year. I hope to continue to do so in 2026.

December 2025 write-up coming soon - it's been a productive month! Yeehaw!

Tal, you're amazing! What a contribution to the community from you and the group of folks you've catalyzed. I'm just catching up on this thread and will check out your google group and patreon for future updates. I'd love to participate in your work days. Are you still finding good weather days to get out there this winter?

For sure, winter is a great time for wonderland! While the most consistent winter crags are the domes in Wonderland South and North, we’ve been spending a lot of time climbing around the Castle View crags. Like much of the platte, almost every formation gets pretty reasonable sun exposure where you could at least chase sun as needed. We’ve spent a lot of “high of 40°” days down there in t-shirts - though those days seem to be pretty rare this winter!

December update published early this month so folks can reference it if they plan on getting out with any time off they may have for NYE/NYD. For those who missed it - 12 new routes this month! (14 if you wanna be generous with link-ups) plus some rebolting and new boulders, and a work day coming up in a couple weeks. Hopefully we can get some chillier days, I've got some hard slab/face lines incubating that I could really use some crisp temps for!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
