Currently working as a ski patroller in the SLC area and looking for a summer guiding gig in the SLC/Moab area. I have my EMT-B and will get my SPI this spring once ski season wraps up. Would appreciate any advice/leads anyone has.
I work as a guide in Moab, can’t speak for SLC. The Moab guide season runs roughly March-October, busiest in the spring and fall, fairly quiet in the summer, and most places close for the winter. If you’re not available till the summer, it’s probably gonna be rough finding work, unfortunately. Spring and fall are the busy seasons, summer is fairly quiet, and most outfits probably won’t be looking to hire in the summer. You’d have better luck in the fall, although most places would probably rather hire someone available for the full season. Guess it depends on when exactly the ski season ends. Starting in April would be a lot more feasible than starting in July.
That makes sense. I’d be finishing in late March/early April. I suppose I didn’t realize the desert timeline would be heavily skewed towards the shoulder season but it makes sense. If you’re comfortable sharing, what certs do you have? Do you feel like outfits are hiring SPI level guides? Thanks for the advice!
I have an SPI and a WFR. Moab's a great place to find guide work with just an SPI. A lot of the work is canyoneering but most places don't expect you to have much canyoneering experience heading in.
