Hello,

I'm planning a trip out west and was wondering if it is possible to boulder in flagstaff this winter (January)? Mainly concerned about weather. Curious about the Priest Draw area. Any insight is helpful! Thank you.

Hi Khidhr,

I'm not much of a boulderer but live down the road from the Draw.  If temps stay where they are this week, yes definitely climbable.  But that is very unlikely and January can be pretty cold under those roofs.  For me it is usually too cold in January in that area.  I wouldn't plan on it.  But if it's too cold Sedona is just down the hill and definitely climbable all winter.

I climb at the draw pretty much year round.  It’s cold in January in the morning and nights but I usually find it pleasant to climb during the day.   One nice thing about priest draw being mostly roof climbs is a bunch of the boulders tends to stay dry or dry out fast even when the weather isn’t great.  I’ve gone up there pretty much every week so far this winter and haven’t had a day yet where I couldn’t climb something.

I’m in a similar boat - I’ll be in the area for a week starting 12/28. Is Priest Draw a decent area for day tripping? Any other areas that are relatively quick in / out - and perhaps more proximate to Phoenix area? (I’ll be in Flagstaff for a few days, and in Phoenix for a few)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
