$104 resole?

Miura Lace

1/2 Sole

Rands

Store pickup, no shipping

$18 of that price is a tariff upcharge

It's almost exactly double what I've traditionally paid for a similar resole.

It's less than a new pair of shoes, and there is a certain value in not having to break a new pair in. Seems bonkers.

My vet or mechanic will call first if things start looking expensive.

Maybe it's time for me to brush off the ol' belt sander and tube of barge.

Sounds about right. Resole prices are set based on retail price. Soles+rands at about 50% msrp

The price of rubber went up twice as much as the shoes  but $18 is bs, that is twice the cost of vibram for a resole.

Everything is too expensive until someone asks me if I would do it for the same price.

Every time I successfully complete a project, I always think I should go into business doing it.

Then I remember how much my back hurts afterwards.

But yeah, 25 years ago I resoled all my shoes. I basically did a shitty job but I climbed well with them. Fast forward to now and I'm a shitty climber on my best days, the resole won't be the reason I flail on another warmup.

Wow, seems out of line, I paid $43 per shoe last go round for 1/2 sole and rand. What company was this that charged $104 highfalutin?

I had John Ramuta do 6 shoes in 2020 in 3 different rubbers (5 were beat to crap and also needed new rands). Here's that invoice: "1/2 soles 6X $34.00=$204, Rands 5X $9=$45, Shipping $22.50" $271.50 total for all 6 pair including shipping.  Not sure Ramuta is still working, but he was after he'd moved to Utah. Dude is a skilled full cobbler who could fix other shoe issues. Here's his contact info then if anyone wants it: resoles@earthlink.net

EDIT: $43 per pair. $34 if the rand wasn't reworked. Per pair.

So that's 86 per pair, which is what I just paid plus the 18 tariff upcharge.

Kinda blown away, this is my first resole since I left Pueblo, where Bennett with ProDeal is a goddamn saint, regardless of what people write online.

Wait, is he back in business?  He had the absolute best resoles anywhere, but I'm pretty sure he retired somewhere in the 2022/2023 time frame.

Just used Yosemite Bum. $45 per pair for half resole, $65 if you need rand. Always had good results from them.

I just paid $97 for resole and rands.

I felt it was a pretty reasonable price.

Dang, current cost for resoles on my TC Pros is about 40 Euros here in Barcelona. Is there a tariff thing going on the States with rubber or is it just general cost of living/doing business?

If y'all want cheaper resoles, send them in before you even get down to the rand.

It takes much longer to do the resole and rand, and the labor cost involved should explain your sticker shock.

Resolers deserve to make a decent wage, and you should've checked the price list when you requested the service.

Both the cost of living went up and salaries stay the same or went down in some cases.

The price of rubber/shoes went up.  But in this case, whoever it is, wanted to increase prices and blamed it on the tariffs. Between the rubber and glue, tariffs rises the price per resole  by about 5 bucks depending where they get supplies from.

Blue collar salaries,  especially the self employed with technical skills,  have gone way up in the last 20 years. Still barely keeping up with costs of living though, especially in desirable areas. I bet a cobbler in BF Mississippi could be cheaper.

1 in 5 people in Mississippi live below the poverty line, and the median household income is $45k/yr for a family of 4.  Cheaper doesn't make it right.

You are paying for a service, in other words, the majority of the cost of a resole goes to the cobbler.  They deserve a good living wage to cover always rising food and housing prices, paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid maternity/paternity leave, etc.

And so do the people that take in the shoes, inspect them, answer the phone and emails, inspect them again before shipment, ship them, etc.

Tariffs don't just affect the actual materials (which they do), but they affect all of the supporting stuff that any business needs to buy, the AC unit that just went out, a new motor for the grinder.

3 resolers went out of business last year.  No business is easy to run and none of these is raking in $.  Most are trying to survive.

And not many climber cobblers want to live in Mississippi,  they want to live in expensive mountain towns which is the point.

Personally I only end up getting around 30% of my shoes resoled, only the best fitting ones,  the rest are given away.

Agreed, likely the best. In 2020 I had to wait about a year as Ramuta was out for some long hike on the PCT, but the wait was worth it. resoles@earthlink.net was email then, and his new phone was 406-465-0494. Can't say if he retired or didn't.

With various injuries, my training time has diminished enough that between the 2 pairs I bought while waiting on John to do the resoling, plus the 6 I had done, I got a shoe rack that Imelda Marcos would envy and I might be set for life.

Sole on the Roll did a great job on 2 pairs of my shoes for $75 total.... For both pairs.
